The TP-Link TL-WA855RE is a 300 Mbps Wi-Fi range extender for 2.4 GHz networks (IEEE 802.11n/g/b) with two external MIMO antennas. It works as a repeater to extend your router or as an access point that turns its 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port into a new Wi-Fi network. An intelligent LED shows when you have a good connection, WPS gives two-tap setup, and the web UI and Tether app cover coverage control, access control and power schedules. It uses an AU plug and measures 80 x 77.8 x 77.3 mm.

The TP-Link TL-WA855RE is a compact 300 Mbps Wi-Fi range extender for 2.4 GHz networks, with two external antennas using MIMO technology to push a stable signal into areas your router cannot reach. It has a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port, repeater and access point modes, an intelligent colour-coded LED for placement, WPS setup, a web UI with coverage, access control and power schedule settings, and Tether app monitoring.

TL-WA855RE overview

The TL-WA855RE is TP-Link's compact 300 Mbps Wi-Fi range extender. TP-Link's pitch is compact but strong: despite its small size it projects Wi-Fi access into the areas of your home that a standard router cannot reach, and supports wireless speeds of up to 300 Mbps. It works on the 2.4 GHz band (2.4 to 2.4835 GHz) using IEEE 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b, with dynamic signal rates of up to 300 Mbps on 11n, 54 Mbps on 11g and 11 Mbps on 11b, and transmission power below 20 dBm EIRP. These are maximum signal rates; real throughput depends on the router, the distance between the units, walls and interference.

What sets it apart from TP-Link's internal-antenna wall-plug extenders is its pair of external antennas. TP-Link says the two external antennas with MIMO technology enhance the network by dramatically increasing wireless speeds, and ensure a stable signal reaches you where you need it most. Setup takes two simple taps: press the WPS button on your router, then press the button on the TL-WA855RE, and the expanded Wi-Fi is ready to use. To find the right outlet, the intelligent LED indicator gives a simple colour-coded indication, showing a good connection or warning that the extender is too far away from the router.

Two work modes are selectable. In repeater (range extender) mode, TP-Link says the TL-WA855RE saves you from poor signal by expanding your router's network coverage into dead zones. In AP mode, it turns its Ethernet port into your own Wi-Fi hotspot, creating a new network from a wired connection. That port is a single 10/100 Mbps RJ45 Ethernet port, which in extender mode can also serve a wired device. Security covers 64/128/152-bit WEP and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK.

TP-Link highlights a functional web UI that puts you in control: Wi-Fi coverage control adjusts the settings that affect your coverage area, access control secures the network by controlling who uses it, and power schedule creates a timetable to turn the network on and off as you like. The wireless functions listed also include enabling or disabling the radio and LED control. The Tether app lets you conveniently monitor the state of the range extender from your phone. The TL-WA855RE has an AU plug, takes 100-240 V at 50/60 Hz, draws up to 3.6 W, measures 80 x 77.8 x 77.3 mm in the specification table and operates at 0 to 40 degrees C. It is CE and RoHS certified, and the box contains the extender and a quick installation guide.
