The TP-Link VIGI NVR1008H is an 8-channel network video recorder without built-in PoE. It records up to 8MP from eight IP cameras with 80 Mbps of video access bandwidth, stores footage on one SATA hard drive of up to 10 TB (not included), outputs 4K over HDMI plus VGA, and supports two-way audio, H.265+ and ONVIF cameras from VIGI and other brands.

VIGI NVR1008H overview

The VIGI NVR1008H is TP-Link's 8-channel recorder without PoE, with the same 246.2 x 148.2 x 45 mm dimensions TP-Link lists for the 4-channel NVR1004H. TP-Link describes the VIGI network video recorder as coordinating with camera systems to help you view, store and play back video, and its port diagram shows audio in and out for two-way audio, HDMI and VGA for video output, a LAN port for Ethernet connection, and two USB ports for a mouse, keyboard or mobile hard disk. Because the LAN port is a single 10/100 Mbps connection with no PoE, cameras are connected and powered through a separate PoE switch.

TP-Link headlines 24/7 continuous recording, automatically storing up to 10 TB of footage from connected cameras. The single SATA interface takes a drive of up to 10 TB; the drive is not included and TP-Link notes one must be installed for operation. TP-Link quotes up to 524 days of video on 10 TB, a figure calculated from laboratory testing with a 3MP VIGI camera; actual results vary with the amount of activity recorded, resolution and other variables. On bandwidth, the NVR1008H has 80 Mbps incoming and 60 Mbps outgoing, and TP-Link says that in laboratory testing with VIGI cameras it can connect up to eight 4MP cameras.

Live view covers eight channels at up to 8MP, with one, four, six or eight window layouts. Decoding is listed as two channels at 8MP, four at 4MP or eight at 2MP at 25 fps, and four at 3MP or two at 5MP at 30 fps. The specification table lists 8-channel synchronous playback, while the overview text says the feed from up to four cameras can be replayed at the same time; TP-Link's footnote adds that fewer channels, or none, may play if total resolution exceeds 16MP. Playback can be sped up and events found in the video schedule, with instant, regular, tag and event playback modes.

TP-Link highlights H.265+ smart video coding to save disk space and ease network load, ONVIF compatibility for adding cameras from VIGI and other brands (it says VIGI NVRs work best with VIGI cameras), the dedicated VIGI app for remote monitoring, and two-way audio with voice intercom. Alarm detection, which uses camera features, covers motion, video tampering, line-crossing, intrusion, region entering and exiting, object abandoned or removed, vehicle and human detection, with video loss, IP conflict, disk and login exceptions. The unit uses a 12 V 1.5 A DC adapter, draws up to 4.25 W without a disk and weighs 0.59 kg.
