The TP-Link TL-SG108-M2 is an 8-port 2.5G multi-gigabit desktop switch: every port runs at 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps or 2.5 Gbps, with 40 Gbps switching capacity and a 29.76 Mpps forwarding rate. It adds loop prevention, 802.1p/DSCP QoS and IGMP snooping, and runs silently in a fanless metal case for desk or wall mounting.

TL-SG108-M2 overview

The TL-SG108-M2 gives eight devices 2.5 Gigabit wired connections from one desktop switch. All eight ports support 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX, so 2.5G-capable devices connect at 2.5 Gbps and existing gigabit and 100 Mbps devices still connect on the same ports. The switch has a switching capacity of 40 Gbps and a packet forwarding rate of 29.76 Mpps. It uses store-and-forward transmission, has a 4K MAC address table and supports 12 KB jumbo frames. Supported standards are IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, 802.3x, 802.1p and 802.3bz.

Network loops are handled automatically. The TL-SG108-M2 detects loops and blocks the corresponding port, while the port indicator flashes slowly to alert you, which TP-Link says makes loop-related issues easy to monitor and address. Other advanced features include 802.3x flow control, 802.1p and DSCP QoS for prioritising traffic, and IGMP snooping. Power and Link/Act indicators show the state of the switch and each port at a glance. Because the ports are identical, any of the eight can be used for any connection, each supporting the same 100 Mbps, 1 Gbps and 2.5 Gbps speeds.

TP-Link built the TL-SG108-M2 in a durable metal case, which it says allows for efficient heat dissipation, excellent signal interference prevention and a long service life. It is fanless, and TP-Link says the design reduces noise, making the switch ideal for noise-sensitive environments. You can place it on a desk or mount it on a wall, and rubber feet are included in the box. The switch measures 226 x 131 x 35 mm (8.9 x 5.2 x 1.4 in).

Power comes from an external 12 VDC / 1.0 A adapter, and maximum power consumption is 8.93 W with 30.36 BTU/h of heat dissipation. The TL-SG108-M2 is rated for operation from -5 °C to 40 °C at 10% to 90% RH non-condensing, and storage from -40 °C to 70 °C at 5% to 90% RH non-condensing, and carries CE and FCC certification. In the box are the TL-SG108-M2 8-Port 2.5G Multi-Gigabit Desktop Switch, a power adapter, an installation guide and rubber feet. ARC IP Networks supplies the TL-SG108-M2 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
