The TP-Link AC50 is a desktop Auranet wireless controller that auto-detects and centrally manages up to 50 CAP-series access points without licence fees. It offers unified configuration with SSID-to-VLAN mapping, captive portal and MAC authentication, load balancing and band steering, batch firmware upgrades and dual-link backup, with five 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports.

AC50 overview

The AC50 is a wireless controller from TP-Link's Auranet CAP series. TP-Link built the series around CAP access points that work together with Auranet wireless controllers, to give businesses scalable Wi-Fi with easy deployment. The AC50 is the desktop model, managing up to 50 access points; TP-Link's comparison places it beside the rack-mount AC500, which handles up to 500. Its management is licence-free, which TP-Link says reduces the operating cost of an enterprise network, and it deploys without changing the existing network topology. The CAP-series models shown on the AC50 page are the CAP1750, CAP1200, CAP300 and CAP300-Outdoor.

Central management starts with automatic discovery. TP-Link explains that the controller detects access points, applies your configuration settings and begins managing them centrally as soon as they join the network. From there you get unified configuration of the wireless network, grouped AP management, scheduled AP reboots, batch firmware upgrades and control of the AP LEDs. Wireless functions listed for the AC50 are L3 management, multi-SSID, load balancing, band steering and WMM, and security options include SSID-to-VLAN mapping, AP isolation, SSID isolation and encryption.

For guest access, the AC50 supports captive portal authentication and MAC authentication. TP-Link describes portal authentication as a way to customise the guest Wi-Fi experience, letting you create your own authentication page to promote your business while keeping control of Wi-Fi settings. Status pages show APs, clients and authenticated users, and system management covers configuration backup and import, ping and traceroute tools and a system log. The controller has web-based management and a DHCP server.

Resilience comes from dual-link backup. TP-Link says that deploying wireless controllers in a dual-link arrangement means that if one controller fails, another can take over so the network remains free from disruption. On the hardware side the AC50 is a desktop unit with five 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports, measuring 209 x 126 x 26 mm and running from 100-240 V AC at 50/60 Hz, with a maximum power figure of 2.5 W (the AU specification table has the power supply and consumption labels swapped). It operates from 0 to 40 °C and carries CE, FCC and RoHS certification. The box contains the AC50, a power cord and a quick installation guide.
