The TP-Link MC210CS is an Omada Gigabit single-mode media converter. It converts 1000BASE-LX fibre to 1000BASE-T copper and back, with SC/UPC fibre connections and one 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 port, working at 1310 nm for up to 20 km on single-mode fibre. It works standalone or in TP-Link's MC1400 chassis and draws a listed 1.8 W maximum from an external adapter.

MC210CS overview

The MC210CS is TP-Link's Omada Gigabit single-mode media converter. TP-Link describes it as a media converter designed to convert 1000BASE-LX fibre to 1000BASE-T copper media or vice versa, designed under the IEEE 802.3ab 1000BASE-T and IEEE 802.3z 1000BASE-LX standards; the full standards list adds IEEE 802.3i 10BASE-T, 802.3u 100BASE-T and 802.3x flow control. It is designed for single-mode fibre cable using the SC-type connector, with TP-Link listing two 1000M SC/UPC ports and one 10/100/1000M RJ45 port with auto-MDI/MDIX. TP-Link says it supports the longwave (LX) laser specification at a full wire-speed forwarding rate and works at 1310 nm on both transmitting and receiving data.

Reach is the reason to choose single-mode. TP-Link says the MC210CS will transmit at extended fibre-optic distances using single-mode fibre of up to 20 kilometres, ten times the 2 km TP-Link lists for its multi-mode MC100CM, and it runs at Gigabit rather than 100 Mbps. That makes it suitable for linking buildings across a site, connecting a remote shed or gatehouse, or carrying a Gigabit uplink from a distant switch back to the core. On the copper side, 1000BASE-T runs over UTP Category 5 or 5e cable up to 100 m or EIA/TIA-568 100 ohm STP up to 100 m. The converter auto-negotiates half-duplex or full-duplex transfer mode.

TP-Link notes that the MC210CS can be used as a standalone device with no chassis required, or with the MC1400 chassis, with auto-MDI/MDI-X on the TX port and front-panel status LEDs. The product page lists PWR and Link/Act LEDs; the series datasheet lists PWR, FX Link/Act and TP Link/Act. Power is from an external power adapter, which is in the box, and the product page lists maximum power consumption of 1.8 W; TP-Link's combined media converter datasheet lists 2.04 W for the MC210CS v7.20, so allow for the higher figure if budgeting power. The AU product page shows hardware version 7.20.

The MC210CS measures 94.5 x 73.0 x 27.0 mm (3.7 x 2.9 x 1.1 in), the same housing as TP-Link's other MC-series converters. It is rated for operation from 0 to 50 degrees C and storage from -40 to 70 degrees C, with 10 to 90% operating and 5 to 90% storage humidity, non-condensing. The product page lists FCC, CE and RoHS safety and emission approvals, and the datasheet lists CE and FCC certification. The box contains the MC210CS, a power adapter and an installation guide. TP-Link's datasheet places the MC210CS in a family that also includes the multi-mode Gigabit MC200CM and the SFP-based MC220L, so check the fibre type before ordering: the MC210CS is for single-mode fibre with SC connectors.
