Specifications from Teltonika's official product data for the RUT986, checked October 2026.

The RUT986 Industrial Global LTE Cat 4 Router in depth

Global LTE with dual SIM and eSIM

The RUT986 pairs a Telit Cat 4 modem with a hardware platform designed for dependable long-term availability. The modem delivers 4G LTE Cat 4 speeds up to 150 DL/50 UL Mbps, with 3G and 2G fallback. It has two SIM slots plus eSIM, and the eSIM supports up to 7 profiles (data plans are not included). Auto-switch cases include weak signal, data limit, roaming and no network. eSIM bootstrap lets you download the initial profile, which helps cut on-site visits.

Interfaces for industrial equipment

The RUT986 has 4 x RJ45 Ethernet ports at 10/100 Mbps, one DB9 RS232 socket and one 6-pin RS485 socket, so serial equipment can connect directly. Digital and analogue inputs, an open collector output and an SPST relay output cover I/O needs. Other connections are a USB 2.0 port, a GNSS receiver supporting GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo and QZSS, and a micro SD slot (internal) for up to 2 TB. Wi-Fi 4 (802.11b/g/n) supports up to 100 simultaneous connections.

Industrial protocols and remote management

Data collection is supported through Modbus (client and server), DNP3, OPC UA, DLMS/COSEM and BACnet, plus data to server over HTTP(S), MQTT and Azure MQTT. VPN options include OpenVPN, IPsec, WireGuard and others. The router runs RutOS, an OpenWrt-based Linux OS. Teltonika's Remote Management System (RMS) provides zero-touch deployment and centralised firmware and configuration updates across many devices. The unit has an aluminium housing, is rated IP30, and operates from -40 °C to 65 °C.
