The TP-Link RE900XD is an AX6000 mesh Wi-Fi 6 range extender with signal rates of 4804 Mbps on 5 GHz and 1148 Mbps on 2.4 GHz across 8 Wi-Fi streams, 160 MHz channels, 4x4 MU-MIMO and OFDMA. It has one 2.5 Gbps Multi-Gig port and two gigabit ports, a built-in access point mode, EasyMesh compatibility, WPA3, desktop or wall mounting and setup in the TP-Link Tether app.

RE900XD overview

The RE900XD is TP-Link's AX6000 mesh Wi-Fi 6 range extender. TP-Link explains the problem it solves simply: a single router has limited Wi-Fi coverage and causes dead zones, so the RE900XD wirelessly connects to your existing router and boosts Wi-Fi signals throughout the home for Wi-Fi 6 speed, capacity and coverage everywhere. It is dual band, with listed signal rates of 4804 Mbps on 5 GHz and 1148 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, which TP-Link totals as speeds up to 6000 Mbps with 8 Wi-Fi streams. The supported wireless standards are IEEE 802.11a/n/ac/ax on 5 GHz and IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ax on 2.4 GHz. TP-Link notes that these are maximum physical signal rates derived from the IEEE 802.11 standard, and that actual throughput, coverage and the number of connected devices are not guaranteed and vary with network conditions, client limitations, building materials, obstacles, traffic and client location. The extender uses internal antennas, and reception sensitivity on 5 GHz ranges from -93 dBm (HE20 MCS0) to -53 dBm (HE160 MCS11), and on 2.4 GHz from -95 dBm (HE20 MCS0) to -62 dBm (HE40 MCS11).

The Wi-Fi 6 features are listed in detail. 160 MHz channels double the channel width compared with traditional 80 MHz channels. 1024-QAM boosts raw speeds by 25% compared with 256-QAM, and a 4x longer OFDM symbol gives increased coverage and 11% faster speeds. 4x4 MU-MIMO works on both uploads and downloads, so streaming, downloading and gaming have bandwidth for everyone, and OFDMA integrates the data of different end devices for higher efficiency in both directions. TP-Link's conditions apply to all of these: use of 802.11ax and its features, including OFDMA, MU-MIMO, HE160 and 1024-QAM, requires clients to support them too, and the 160 MHz bandwidth may be unavailable in some regions because of regulatory restrictions. BSS Colouring marks frames from neighbouring networks so the RE900XD can ignore them, reducing interference from neighbours. Target Wake Time lets devices negotiate when they wake to send or receive data; TP-Link says saving client battery power requires the clients to also support the 802.11ax standard, and actual power reduction varies.

Wired connections are a strength. The RE900XD has one 2.5 Gbps Multi-Gig port and two gigabit ports. TP-Link suggests plugging a PC, smart TV, game console or NAS into the 2.5 Gbps port for a fast wired connection, and notes that 2.5 Gbps internet speeds require compatible service plans and equipment. The extender is more than a range extender: connect a wired internet connection to it with an Ethernet cable and it becomes a dual-band Wi-Fi access point, the two working modes listed being Range Extender and Access Point. It is EasyMesh-compatible, with wireless and wired backhaul in RE mode, so if you still have dead zones you can add another EasyMesh-compatible router or range extender to form a whole home mesh with one Wi-Fi name. TP-Link adds that its EasyMesh products can network with other devices using EasyMesh, that failed connections may be due to firmware conflicts between vendors, and that EasyMesh is still being developed on some models. Smart Roaming lets you walk from room to room and stay connected, and is designed for devices that support the 802.11k/v standard.

The industrial design lets you place the RE900XD on a desktop or remove the base and fix it to a wall, and TP-Link says its external power plug takes up less space to free up your outlets and power strips. The front panel shows power, 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, signal and LAN status indicators, and there are WPS and reset buttons. Security is WPA/WPA2-PSK and WPA3; TP-Link describes WPA3 as bringing protection against brute-force attacks, stronger encryption and an improved system for adding devices, and notes WPA3 requires clients to also support it. Wireless functions include LED control, access control, a power schedule and Wi-Fi coverage settings. You set up and manage it through the TP-Link Tether app on Android or iOS, or in a web browser. It runs on 100-240 V 50/60 Hz input, with maximum power consumption of 18 W (with power adapter) and 9.2 W on average, measures 189 x 59 x 200 mm and operates at 0 to 40 degrees C. The box contains the RE900XD Wi-Fi range extender and a quick installation guide.
