The TP-Link Tapo D230S1 is a smart battery video doorbell camera kit that pairs the Tapo video doorbell with an included Tapo H200 hub. The doorbell records 2K 5MP (2560 x 1920) video in a 4:3 head-to-toe view with a starlight sensor, spotlight colour night vision and 7.6 m IR, runs on a 6700 mAh removable rechargeable battery, detects people, pets, vehicles and packages, supports two-way audio and quick responses, and is IP64 rated. Recordings go to a microSD card in the hub (up to 512 GB, card sold separately) or Tapo Care cloud (subscription required).

Tapo D230S1 overview

The Tapo D230S1 is TP-Link's smart battery video doorbell camera kit, sold as a set of the Tapo video doorbell and the Tapo H200 hub. The doorbell talks to the hub over Sub-1G 868 MHz for the local link, and the hub joins your network either over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) or through its 10/100 Mbps RJ45 Ethernet port. Video is 2K 5MP at a maximum resolution of 2560 x 1920 and 15 fps, captured by a 1/2.7 inch progressive scan CMOS sensor behind a 2.1 mm F2.1 lens, compressed with H.264 and enhanced with 3D noise reduction and WDR. The specification lists the field of view as 166 degrees diagonal, 135 degrees horizontal and 102.8 degrees vertical. TP-Link's starlight sensor is there to capture fine detail in low light, and you can zoom digitally up to 16x in the Tapo app's live view.

TP-Link puts emphasis on the head-to-toe view. Because the live view is 4:3 rather than 16:9, the doorbell shows more vertical detail, and TP-Link says you can check visitors from head to toe as close as 1 m. That distance is measured at the optimal installation height of 1.2 m, and TP-Link notes the actual distance depends on how high the doorbell is mounted. Night vision combines an embedded spotlight and the starlight sensor for full-colour images at night, plus 850 nm IR LEDs with a range of 7.6 m. The kit includes a 15 degree mounting wedge, and TP-Link's page shows wedge choices for horizontal and vertical angles so you can suit more placement scenarios and adjust the view. You can stick the doorbell to a wall with the 3M adhesive or mount it with the screws and bracket provided.

Power comes from a 6700 mAh removable rechargeable lithium-ion battery (the Tapo A100 battery is in the box) using a low-power protocol to extend usage. TP-Link quotes battery life of up to 180 days, based on its laboratory testing triggering 10 to 20 events per day; actual battery life varies with device settings. TP-Link's page also charts battery life by activity, with 30 second clips: about 6 months at 10 triggers a day, 3 months at 20 a day and 1 month at 60 a day. The doorbell has a single PIR motion sensor with a 130 degree horizontal field of view and an ambient light sensor, and on-device AI detects motion, people, pets, vehicles and packages, sending instant notifications to the Tapo app. Activity zones are supported with motion detection only, and notifications with snapshots need Tapo Care services. You can answer with two-way audio with noise cancellation or a recorded quick response, and TP-Link states an indoor chime is provided with a choice of ringtones so you are alerted when you are home.

Recordings can be saved to a microSD card in the hub's slot, up to 512 GB (card purchased separately), or to Tapo Care cloud storage, which requires a subscription. The H200 hub works with Tapo smart sensors, buttons, Sub-1G switches, cameras and video doorbells, connecting up to 64 Sub-1G switches, sensors or buttons plus 4 cameras or video doorbells. An anti-theft alarm alerts you when someone tries to remove the doorbell, with a 96 dB siren at the doorbell and 100 dB at the hub (both measured at 10 cm). Security features are on-device machine learning, 128-bit AES encryption with SSL/TLS and WPA/WPA2-PSK, and the kit works with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. The doorbell is IP64 water and dust resistant, which TP-Link says lets it operate well on rainy days and in damp environments, and it runs from -20 to 45 degrees C. The doorbell measures 146 x 54.5 x 35.5 mm and the hub 71.45 x 71.45 x 31.25 mm. The Tapo app needs iOS 12.0 or higher or Android 4.4 or higher.
