AcuSense NVR FAQ — DS-96256NXI-S24R

What is the Hikvision DS-96256NXI-S24R and how many cameras does it support?

The DS-96256NXI-S24R is a Hikvision Ultra S Series 4U rack-mount Network Video Recorder (NVR) designed for large-scale enterprise and campus surveillance deployments. It supports up to 256 IP cameras at resolutions up to 32 MP, with an incoming bandwidth of 1280 Mbps (standard mode) and 1024 Mbps outgoing. The 24 SATA HDD bays can each hold up to 20 TB, providing up to 480 TB of raw storage capacity. It operates across a temperature range of −10 to +55 °C, making it suitable for both climate-controlled data rooms and industrial environments.

What AcuSense AI features does the DS-96256NXI-S24R provide without AI cameras?

The AcuSense engine built into the DS-96256NXI-S24R performs facial recognition, perimeter protection (line crossing and intrusion detection), and video structuralization directly on the NVR — no AI cameras are required for these functions. In simultaneous mode, the NVR processes 8 channels up to 2 MP; in independent mode, 4 channels up to 2 MP. When connected to AcuSense-capable cameras, all 256 channels benefit from AI analytics, and AcuSearch indexes up to 345,600 targets per day across all camera channels for rapid forensic search.

How does facial recognition work on the DS-96256NXI-S24R and what are the library limits?

The DS-96256NXI-S24R supports up to 64 separate face picture libraries, with a total capacity of up to 300,000 individual face images (each image up to 4 MB; total library capacity up to 10 GB). The system performs 16-channel simultaneous face picture comparison at a rate of 24 pictures per second, enabling real-time identity matching at the entrance points or throughout a campus. Face detection functions include face picture comparison, human face capture, and face picture search, and can be combined with ANPR and people-counting analytics when AI cameras are connected.

What RAID options and storage capacity does the S24R support?

The DS-96256NXI-S24R is equipped with 24 internal 3.5-inch SATA HDD bays, each supporting drives up to 20 TB, for a maximum raw capacity of 480 TB. It supports RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10, and N+M hot spare configurations to protect against drive failure without interrupting recording. In RAID mode the incoming bandwidth is 640 Mbps and outgoing is 512 Mbps. An additional eSATA interface is available for external expansion, providing further flexibility for archival or overflow storage.

What video output options does the DS-96256NXI-S24R offer for control rooms?

The DS-96256NXI-S24R provides four HDMI outputs and two VGA outputs. HDMI 3 supports 8K (7680 × 4320) at 30 Hz — ideal for video wall applications — while HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 deliver up to 4K at 60 Hz, and HDMI 4 and both VGA ports output up to 1080p/60 Hz. Multiple output modes support simultaneous or independent configurations, enabling complex control room layouts where operators view different channel groups on separate screens. An HDMI input with loopback pass-through is also provided for local video signage or matrix routing.

Is the DS-96256NXI-S24R compatible with third-party cameras and Australian electrical standards?

Yes. The DS-96256NXI-S24R uses ONVIF Profile S/G and RTSP for camera access, making it compatible with the vast majority of IP cameras from leading manufacturers. Hikvision cameras are supported via native SDK and ISAPI for full feature integration. The unit operates on 100–240 VAC, 50–60 Hz with a redundant power supply, and holds RCM certification confirming compliance with Australian electromagnetic compatibility and electrical safety requirements. It is available from Australian stock via ARC IP Networks, with full local support.

Professional Overview

The Hikvision DS-96256NXI-S24R is a flagship 4U rack-mount Network Video Recorder from the Ultra S Series AcuSense family, purpose-engineered for high-density enterprise surveillance environments including airports, transport hubs, large campuses, correctional facilities, and city-wide safe-city projects. At its core, the platform accommodates up to 256 simultaneous IP camera inputs at resolutions up to 32 MP, supported by a 1280 Mbps incoming bandwidth that sustains continuous, lossless recording across every channel. The integrated AcuSense AI engine delivers facial recognition, perimeter intrusion detection, video structuralization, and AcuSearch forensic retrieval entirely within the NVR — making it possible to deploy full AI-powered surveillance without requiring upgraded camera hardware.

The storage architecture of the DS-96256NXI-S24R is built around 24 internal 3.5-inch SATA HDD bays, each supporting drives up to 20 TB for a maximum raw capacity of 480 TB. Hardware RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, and N+M hot spare configurations safeguard recorded footage against single or multiple drive failures, while the dual redundant power supply eliminates single-point power failures. The four-port 10/100/1000/2500 Mbps Ethernet interface allows camera VLANs, management networks, and remote access to be separated for optimum network security architecture. Up to 512 simultaneous remote connections are supported, enabling large operations teams to review live and recorded footage concurrently.

AcuSense technology on the DS-96256NXI-S24R distinguishes itself through its scale of facial analytics: up to 64 face picture libraries holding 300,000 individual face images can be cross-matched in real time against 16 channels simultaneously at 24 pictures per second. AcuSearch extends this intelligence to object-based retrieval, indexing up to 345,600 person and vehicle targets per day across all camera channels, dramatically reducing forensic investigation time from hours to minutes. The 8K-capable HDMI 3 output, together with independent HDMI and VGA display modes, allows the unit to drive sophisticated video wall and multi-operator control room configurations directly, without additional video matrix hardware. H.265+ compression across the 256-channel input stream minimises storage consumption by up to 75% compared with H.264, extending the effective retention window for any given storage capacity.

Designed and tested for mission-critical operation, the DS-96256NXI-S24R carries RCM certification confirming compliance with Australian electromagnetic compatibility and electrical safety requirements, alongside CE, IC, CB, RoHS, REACH, WEEE, UKCA, and LOA certifications for global deployments. The unit operates reliably across −10 to +55 °C with 10–90% non-condensing humidity, and consumes no more than 100 W without installed drives — a notable efficiency achievement given its channel density and AI processing capability. For integrators and end users seeking a high-capacity, AI-ready NVR platform that can scale to citywide surveillance requirements, the DS-96256NXI-S24R represents the definitive enterprise-grade choice.
