The TP-Link DS1024G is an Omada 24-port gigabit unmanaged rackmount switch: twenty-four 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports, 48 Gbps switching capacity, a 35.7 Mpps forwarding rate, Isolation Mode, loop prevention and 802.1p/DSCP QoS. It is fanless, has a standard 19-inch rack-mountable steel case, runs from 100-240 VAC mains power and is plug and play.

DS1024G overview

The DS1024G is TP-Link's Omada 24-port gigabit unmanaged rackmount switch. It has twenty-four 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports, each with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX, and it supports MAC address self-learning. The standards TP-Link lists are IEEE 802.3i, IEEE 802.3u, IEEE 802.3ab and IEEE 802.3x. For cabling, TP-Link specifies UTP category 3, 4 or 5 cable (maximum 100 m) for 10BASE-T, and UTP category 5, 5e or above cable (maximum 100 m) for 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T, so a Cat5e or better run of up to 100 m is within specification for gigabit on every port. TP-Link describes it as plug and play: connect it to power, connect your devices, such as desktops, printers, a NAS and your internet router, and it is ready. No configuration or central management is required.

Performance figures come from TP-Link's published specifications. Switching capacity is 48 Gbps and the packet forwarding rate is 35.7 Mpps, with store-and-forward transmission, an 8K MAC address table and 10 KB jumbo frames. Although it sits in TP-Link's unmanaged range, the DS1024G has several advanced features. Isolation Mode, available on ports 1 to 22, allows one-click client traffic separation for higher security and performance: TP-Link says it divides traffic for ports to avoid snooping and tampering and isolates broadcast storms. Loop prevention, available on ports 1 to 24, monitors and addresses loop-related issues within your network structure to prevent disruptions caused by looping.

802.1p/DSCP QoS is also supported. TP-Link explains that QoS (Quality of Service) ensures smooth traffic for latency-sensitive applications, such as voice and video, under limited bandwidth resources. Green Ethernet technology is listed among the software features. Physically the DS1024G uses a durable metal casing: a standard 19-inch rack-mountable steel case measuring 440 x 140 x 44 mm (17.3 x 5.5 x 1.7 in), with rackmount kits and rubber feet in the box. It is fanless for silent operation and has a physical security lock. Power is 100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, through the included power cord. TP-Link lists a maximum power consumption of 13.62 W and a maximum heat dissipation of 46.44 BTU/h.

TP-Link rates the DS1024G for operation from 0 to 40 degrees C (32 to 104 degrees F) at 10 to 90 per cent non-condensing humidity, and for storage from -40 to 70 degrees C (-40 to 158 degrees F) at 5 to 90 per cent non-condensing humidity. Certifications are FCC and CE. One point to note when planning an Omada network: TP-Link states that Omada unmanaged switches do not support Omada SDN central management, so the DS1024G is not managed from the Omada controller. In the box are the DS1024G switch, a power cord, an installation guide, rackmount kits and rubber feet. ARC IP Networks supplies the DS1024G from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
