The TP-Link DS105G is an Omada 5-port gigabit unmanaged desktop switch: five 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports, 10 Gbps switching capacity, 802.1p/DSCP QoS, IGMP Snooping and loop prevention in a durable, fanless metal casing for desktop or wall mounting. It is plug and play, with no configuration and no management required.

DS105G overview

The DS105G is TP-Link's Omada 5-port gigabit unmanaged desktop switch. It has five 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports with auto-negotiation and Auto-MDI/MDIX on every port, so each port works out its own speed and cable type. TP-Link describes it as plug and play, with no configuration needed and no management required: connect your devices and the switch is ready. Supported standards are IEEE 802.3i, 802.3u, 802.3ab, 802.3x and IEEE 802.1p, which cover 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps and gigabit Ethernet over copper, flow control and traffic priority tagging.

Performance figures come from TP-Link's datasheet. Switching capacity is 10 Gbps and the packet forwarding rate is 7.4 Mpps, with store-and-forward transmission, a 2K MAC address table, 1 Mbit of packet buffer memory and 16 KB jumbo frames. IEEE 802.3x flow control provides reliable data transfer. Although it is unmanaged, the DS105G supports 802.1p/DSCP QoS and IGMP Snooping functions, which TP-Link lists among its advanced features. Loop prevention monitors and addresses loop-related issues within your network structure to prevent disruptions caused by looping, and the datasheet's product pictures show a switch on the unit for loop prevention.

Physically the DS105G has a durable metal casing with desktop or wall-mounting options and a fanless design. TP-Link's product page lists the dimensions as 100 x 98 x 25 mm (3.9 x 3.9 x 1.0 in), while the datasheet gives 99.8 x 97.8 x 25 mm. There is a power indicator, and each RJ45 port has a built-in Link/Act indicator. Power comes from an external power adapter with a 5 V DC / 0.6 A output, and Green Ethernet technology reduces power consumption. TP-Link lists maximum power consumption of 3.1 W at 220 V / 50 Hz and maximum heat dissipation of 10.57 BTU/h on the product page (10.54 BTU/h in the datasheet).

The switch is rated for operation from 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90 per cent RH non-condensing, and for storage from -40 to 70 degrees C at 5 to 90 per cent RH non-condensing. The product page lists CE and FCC certification, and the datasheet lists FCC, CE and RoHS. One point to note when planning an Omada network: TP-Link's datasheet states that Omada unmanaged switches do not support Omada SDN central management, so the DS105G is not managed from the Omada controller. In the box are the DS105G switch, a power adapter and an installation guide. ARC IP Networks supplies the DS105G from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
