The TP-Link DS1018GMP is an Omada 18-port gigabit unmanaged rackmount switch with sixteen 802.3af/at PoE+ RJ45 ports and two combo gigabit SFP slots. It offers up to 30 W per PoE port and a 250 W total PoE budget, Extend Mode up to 250 m, Priority, Isolation and PoE Auto Recovery modes, and is plug and play with no configuration required.

DS1018GMP overview

The DS1018GMP is TP-Link's Omada 18-port gigabit rackmount switch with 16-port PoE+. It has sixteen 10/100/1000 Mbps PoE+ RJ45 ports and two combo gigabit SFP slots, with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX. Ports 1 to 16 deliver PoE to IEEE 802.3af/at compliant powered devices, with up to 30 W per PoE port and a total PoE power budget of 250 W. TP-Link notes that PoE budget calculations are based on laboratory testing, and that the actual PoE power budget is not guaranteed and will vary as a result of client limitations and environmental factors. The SFP slots accept 1000BASE-X multimode (MMF) and single-mode (SMF) fibre, which gives you a fibre uplink option alongside the copper ports.

Four port modes are selected with buttons on the front panel, which TP-Link's datasheet labels Priority, Extend, Isolation and Recovery. Extend Mode on ports 1 to 4 gives up to 250 m of data and power transmitting range; TP-Link states that the speed of the ports in Extend Mode downgrades to 10 Mbps, and that the actual transmission distance may vary due to the power consumption of PoE-powered devices or the cable quality and type. Priority Mode on ports 1 to 4 is designed to protect the quality of sensitive applications like video monitoring. Isolation Mode, on ports 1-8 / 9-16, allows one-click client traffic separation for higher security and performance. PoE Auto Recovery on ports 1 to 16 keeps PoE devices running by automatically rebooting dropped or unresponsive powered devices.

Performance figures from TP-Link: switching capacity is 36 Gbps, the datasheet gives a packet forwarding rate of 26.79 Mpps, packet buffer memory is 4.1 Mbit, the MAC address table holds 8K entries with auto-learning and auto-aging, and jumbo frames of up to 10 KB are supported, with store-and-forward forwarding. 802.1p/DSCP QoS and IEEE 802.3x flow control are listed among the advanced functions. Supported standards on the product page are IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, 802.3x, 802.3af, 802.3at, 802.3z and 802.1p. For cabling, TP-Link specifies UTP category 5, 5e, 6 or above cable (maximum 100 m) for 1000BASE-T. The DS1018GMP is plug and play, with no configuration or central management required, and TP-Link states that Omada unmanaged switches do not support Omada SDN central management.

Physically the DS1018GMP measures 440 x 180 x 44 mm (17.3 x 7.1 x 1.7 in), is rack mountable with the included rackmount kit (the datasheet lists desktop or rack installation) and has a physical security lock. It has two fans; the datasheet gives noise levels of 45.5 dBA minimum and 48.95 dBA maximum at 50 cm and 25 degrees C. Power is 100-240 VAC, 50/60 Hz. Maximum power consumption is 19 W with no powered device connected and 293.34 W with 250 W of powered devices connected (220 V / 50 Hz); maximum heat dissipation is 64.79 BTU/h and 1000.29 BTU/h respectively. It is rated for 0 to 50 degrees C operation at 10 to 90 per cent RH non-condensing and carries CE and FCC certification. In the box are the DS1018GMP, an installation guide, a power cord, a rackmount kit and rubber feet. ARC IP Networks supplies the DS1018GMP from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
