Microsoft 365 Copilot in depth

AI inside Microsoft 365

Microsoft 365 Copilot works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. In Word it drafts and summarises, in Excel it analyses data and creates charts, in PowerPoint it builds outlines and layouts, in Outlook it drafts replies and summarises threads, and in Teams it recaps meetings and highlights action items.

Copilot Chat versus a Copilot licence

Copilot Chat is web-grounded and included with Microsoft 365 plans at no extra cost. Adding a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence grounds chat in your work content, adds Copilot in Teams and the Office apps, and unlocks pre-built agents and advanced analytics.

Security and privacy

Copilot uses the same controls and permissions that protect your data in Microsoft 365. With Enterprise Data Protection, prompts and responses stay inside the Microsoft 365 service boundary, are logged under your retention policies and are not used to train the underlying large language models.

Subscription terms

  • Annual commitment: a 12-month term, priced per user.
  • Under Microsoft's New Commerce terms, a subscription can only be cancelled in the first seven days of its term.
  • You can add licences during the term; reductions apply from the next renewal.
  • Monthly billing is available on request through a quote.
