Part of our Ubiquiti UniFi Routers range — browse and compare the full range of UniFi gateways, Dream Machines and routers.

Ubiquiti UCG-Ultra: the entry point to UniFi networking

The UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra is the most affordable way into a proper UniFi network. It provides 1 Gbps of IDS/IPS routing, supports 300+ clients and 30+ UniFi devices, and includes the UniFi Network controller — so there is nothing else to buy to start managing UniFi gear.

It is genuinely small and genuinely frugal: 141.8 x 127.6 x 30 mm, 520 g (1.1 lb), fanless, and drawing a maximum of 6.2W over USB-C.

Important: UniFi Network only

This is the one thing to understand before buying. Ubiquiti lists the UCG-Ultra's application suite as Network — it runs UniFi Network, and only UniFi Network.

That means no UniFi Protect. The UCG-Ultra has no NVR storage and no camera capacity in its specification, so it cannot record security cameras. It also does not host UniFi Access, Talk or Innerspace.

NVR storageNoneSelectable NVMe SSD up to 2 TB

If you want cameras, choose the UCG-Max — it adds the full application suite and ships with a 512 GB NVMe SSD included. The UCG-Ultra is the right choice when you need routing, firewalling, VLANs and WiFi management, and nothing more.

Ports and multi-WAN

The single 2.5 Gigabit port is the WAN, with four Gigabit ports for the LAN. Multi-WAN load balancing is supported across up to 4 WAN ports, so you can run a second service for failover.

Two things this does not have: no PoE, so access points and cameras need a PoE switch; and no 10 Gigabit. The LAN ports being gigabit also means the 1 Gbps routing figure is well matched to the hardware — this is a gateway for services up to about a gigabit.

6.2W over USB-C

Power draw is the quiet advantage here. At a maximum of 6.2W and 21 BTU/hr, the UCG-Ultra uses less energy than most LED bulbs, runs completely silently, and is powered by USB-C (5V DC/3A) with the adapter included.

In practice that means it can sit anywhere — a shelf, a cupboard, behind a TV — and can be kept alive on a modest UPS or USB-C power bank through an outage, which is not something you can say about a rack gateway. It operates from -10 to 40° C (14 to 104° F).

Who the UCG-Ultra suits

  • Homes and small offices on services up to about a gigabit wanting enterprise-grade firewalling, VLANs and VPN.
  • First UniFi deployment — the Network controller is built in, so it can adopt and manage access points and switches immediately.
  • Replacing an ISP-supplied router with something that has real traffic inspection and network segmentation.
  • Low-power or silent installs — 6.2W, fanless, USB-C.
  • Networks with no camera requirement, or where cameras are recorded on a separate NVR.

Adding cameras later? Plan for the UCG-Max instead, or pair the Ultra with a dedicated recorder from the Protect NVR comparison. Choosing access points to go with it? See the access point comparison.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the UCG-Ultra record security cameras?

No. Ubiquiti lists the UCG-Ultra's application suite as Network only, and it has no NVR storage or camera capacity in its specification. For UniFi Protect you need the UCG-Max, UCG-Fiber or a Dream Machine.

What is the difference between the UCG-Ultra and the UCG-Max?

The Max is faster at 2.3 Gbps versus 1 Gbps, has five 2.5 GbE ports instead of one 2.5 GbE plus four gigabit, and crucially runs the full UniFi application suite including Protect with a 512 GB NVMe SSD included. The Ultra runs UniFi Network only.

How fast is the UCG-Ultra?

1 Gbps of IDS/IPS routing throughput with 55,000+ with CyberSecure threat signatures. It suits internet services up to about a gigabit.

Does the UCG-Ultra have PoE?

No. It provides no PoE. Access points and cameras need a separate PoE switch, which the gateway will still adopt and manage.

How many devices and clients does it support?

300+ simultaneous clients and 30+ managed UniFi devices.

What ports does the UCG-Ultra have?

One 2.5 GbE RJ45 port and four gigabit RJ45 ports. The 2.5 GbE port is the default WAN, and up to 4 WAN ports can be configured for multi-WAN load balancing.

How is it powered?

By USB-C — USB type C (5V DC/3A) — with the adapter included. Maximum draw is only 6.2W.

Do I need a separate UniFi controller?

No. The UniFi Network controller runs on the gateway itself, so it can manage your UniFi switches and access points with no additional hardware or cloud subscription.

Is there a subscription or licence fee?

No. UniFi has no recurring licence costs. CyberSecure is the one optional paid add-on for an expanded threat signature set.

Is the UCG-Ultra suitable for a business?

Yes, for smaller sites. It handles 300+ clients with full firewalling, VLANs and VPN. Larger sites, multi-gig services or anything needing UniFi Protect should step up to the UCG-Max or UCG-Fiber.
