The TP-Link TL-WR902AC is an AC750 dual-band wireless travel router with 433 Mbps on 5 GHz and 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It weighs 56.7 g, switches between Router, Hotspot, Range Extender, Client and Access Point modes, has a 10/100 Mbps WAN/LAN port and a USB 2.0 port for file sharing or charging a phone, and runs from micro USB power.

TL-WR902AC overview

The TL-WR902AC is TP-Link's AC750 wireless travel router, small and light enough to pack for the road at 74 x 67 x 22 mm and 56.7 g. Unlike single-band nano routers, it is dual band Wi-Fi 5: 802.11ac at 433 Mbps on 5 GHz and 802.11n at 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, through two internal antennas, for HD streaming on all your devices. TP-Link says 802.11ac is three times faster than wireless N, and rates its range for two-bedroom houses.

A single mode switch selects between five modes, which TP-Link says makes it suitable for home, a hotel room or the road. Router mode connects to a hotel's Ethernet (or, per TP-Link's overview, a 3G/4G USB modem) to create a private wireless network. Hotspot (WISP) mode connects to an outdoor WISP access point for a private hotspot in public areas. Range Extender mode extends existing Wi-Fi to eliminate dead zones, Client mode connects wired devices such as a desktop or game console to Wi-Fi, and Access Point mode creates a wireless network from a wired connection.

The multifunctional USB 2.0 port does two jobs. It shares files and media from a USB drive through your browser, with NTFS and FAT32 support and FTP server and media server functions, and it can supply up to 5 V 2 A to charge a phone or tablet on the go. The router itself is powered through micro USB from an adapter, a portable charger or a laptop, and the box includes a power adapter. There is one 10/100 Mbps WAN/LAN port and a single-core CPU.

Security covers an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding, ALG, separate 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz guest networks, and WEP, WPA and WPA2. Parental controls provide URL filtering and time controls, and QoS by device, IGMP proxy for IPTV, port forwarding, DMZ, UPnP, DHCP reservation and NO-IP, Comex and DynDNS are supported, with IPv4 and IPv6. Management is via the Tether app or web page. It carries FCC, CE and RoHS certification. In the box are the TL-WR902AC, a power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
