The TP-Link TL-WA850RE is a 300 Mbps universal Wi-Fi range extender that plugs into a wall outlet and extends your router's 2.4 GHz 802.11n network into areas it cannot reach. It has two internal antennas, a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port that can connect a wired device, range extender and access point modes, a five-light smart signal indicator, push-button setup and the Tether app with LED Night Mode.

TL-WA850RE overview

The TL-WA850RE is TP-Link's 300 Mbps universal Wi-Fi range extender, a compact wall-plug unit for homes and offices with a Wi-Fi dead zone. TP-Link explains that it connects to your router wirelessly, strengthening and expanding the router's signal into areas it cannot reach on its own, and reduces signal interference to keep coverage reliable. It is a single-band extender working on 2.4 GHz (2.4 to 2.4835 GHz) with IEEE 802.11n, 802.11g and 802.11b, and signal rates of up to 300 Mbps on 11n, 54 Mbps on 11g and 11 Mbps on 11b, all dynamic. Two internal antennas sit inside the housing, so nothing sticks out from the outlet, and transmission power is below 20 dBm EIRP. These are maximum signal rates; what you see in practice depends on your router, distance and the building.

Getting it on the network takes two buttons. Press the WPS button on your router and the Range Extender button on the TL-WA850RE within two minutes, and the two connect. Once it is linked to your existing router you can simply unplug it and plug it back in at a location with better signal quality and coverage, without configuring the extender again. To help with that, the smart signal indicator has five signal lights showing the strength received from the router. TP-Link recommends choosing a location where at least three signal lights are lit blue to guarantee good performance.

The single 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port (RJ45) adds flexibility. As an Ethernet bridge, the TL-WA850RE can act as a wireless adapter for a wired device, such as a Blu-ray player, gaming console, DVR or internet TV, while still sharing the wireless network with laptops, tablets and phones at the same time. It also supports Access Point mode, so a wired connection from your router can become a new Wi-Fi network; Range Extender and Access Point are both listed as working modes. Wireless functions are WMM (Wi-Fi Multimedia), wireless MAC address filtering, wireless statistics and a domain login function, and security covers 64/128/152-bit WEP and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK.

Management is available from the TP-Link Tether app on iOS and Android, which lets you access and manage the extender's features from any mobile device, including the LED Control function's Night Mode for switching the lights off overnight. The TL-WA850RE has an AU plug, takes 100-240 V at 50/60 Hz and uses about 3 W at most. It measures 110 x 65.8 x 75.2 mm, operates at 0 to 40 degrees C in 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, and is CE and RoHS certified. The box contains the 300Mbps Universal Wi-Fi Range Extender TL-WA850RE and a quick installation guide. It is a sensible fit for 2.4 GHz devices that need a stronger signal, rather than for high-speed dual-band or Wi-Fi 6 clients.
