The TP-Link VX420-G2h is an AX5400 hybrid Wi-Fi 6 modem router with VoIP. It combines a VDSL2/ADSL2+ modem, a gigabit Ethernet WAN port for fibre or cable connections and a SIM card slot for 4G LTE (up to 300 Mbps down and 50 Mbps up) that can act as an automatic internet backup, with four gigabit LAN ports, a phone port for VoIP, a USB 2.0 port and dual-band Wi-Fi 6 rated at 4804 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz.

VX420-G2h overview

The VX420-G2h is TP-Link's AX5400 hybrid Wi-Fi 6 modem router with VoIP. TP-Link describes it as a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) hybrid modem router that offers multiple connection options and VoIP telephony, and the hybrid part is the point: one unit takes a DSL line, a fibre or cable connection through Ethernet, or 4G cellular through its SIM card slot. On DSL it supports VDSL2 to ITU G.993.2 with G.vector (G.993.5) and G.INP (G.998.4); TP-Link's specification table lists up to profile 17b, while its feature text refers to VDSL2 Profile 17a. ADSL2+ (G.992.5), ADSL2 (G.992.3 and G.992.4) and ADSL (full-rate ANSI T1.413 Issue 2, G.992.1, G.992.2, G.994.1 and G.995.1) are also supported, with ATM modes covering PPP over ATM, PPP over Ethernet, IPoA, MER/IPoE and bridge, and up to 8 PVCs. TP-Link's footnote states that 100 Mbps, 300 Mbps or 1000 Mbps internet speeds require compatible service plans and equipment, and that actual speed may be limited by the Ethernet port rate, the cable, internet service provider factors and other conditions.

The built-in 4G LTE modem lists 300 Mbps downstream and 50 Mbps upstream, on FDD-LTE bands B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20 and B28 and TDD-LTE bands B38, B40 and B41, with a micro SIM card slot and internal Wi-Fi and LTE antennas according to the datasheet. TP-Link notes that only one internet access method can serve as the WAN connection at any time, that the cellular connection can always serve as an automatic internet backup, and that actual speeds may vary between households. The USB 2.0 port supports Samba storage, an FTP server, a media server and a 3G/4G modem. Wired connections are one 10/100/1000 Mbps WAN port and four 10/100/1000 Mbps LAN ports, which TP-Link presents as fast and flexible internet access. For telephony there is a phone (FXS) port with SIP VoIP for up to 8 accounts, call logs, call rules, do-not-disturb and call blocking, call forwarding, voice mail and T.38; TP-Link says it supports multiple VoIP accounts and call features to surpass traditional landlines.

Wi-Fi is dual-band Wi-Fi 6, IEEE 802.11ax/ac/n/a on 5 GHz and 802.11ax/b/g/n on 2.4 GHz, with signal rates of 4804 Mbps on 5 GHz (HE160) and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz (HE40). TP-Link calls this up to 5.4 Gbps dual-band Wi-Fi, and notes that maximum signal rates are the physical rates derived from IEEE 802.11 specifications, with actual throughput, coverage and number of connected devices varying with network conditions, client limitations and the environment. A high-performance antenna array and beamforming extend Wi-Fi through the home, while OFDMA and MU-MIMO increase capacity for simultaneous transmission to more devices; Wi-Fi 6, OFDMA, DL/UL MU-MIMO, 1024-QAM, HE160 and WPA3 require clients that support the same features. Wireless functions include Air Time Fairness, WMM, wireless statistics, MAC filtering and schedules on both bands, plus guest networks on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The VX420-G2h is EasyMesh compatible with 802.11k/v/r; TP-Link states a mesh needs two or more devices, that the product is compatible with standardised EasyMesh but has not obtained Wi-Fi EasyMesh certification, and that it can only work as a controller.

Security covers WPA/WPA2/WPA3 encryption, an IPv4/IPv6 SPI firewall, DDoS protection, service filtering, access control and IP and MAC binding, with parental controls named among the features. VPN support lists OpenVPN, PPTP and IPSec, with up to 16 IPSec VPN tunnels. Routing features include NAT forwarding, QoS, address reservation, DHCP server, client list, relay and condition pools, virtual servers, port triggering, DMZ, ALG and UPnP, and Dyn DNS, NO-IP and TP-Link DNS. Local management is through the web interface and the Aginet app, which needs a TP-Link ID with the device bound to it; service providers get TR-069, TR-098, TR-181, TR-369, TR-111 and TR-143 remote management and TP-Link Aginet Unified Cloud (TAUC). The unit measures 241.6 x 201.3 x 82.5 mm, runs from a 12V/2.5A supply, operates from 0 to 40 °C, and the AU datasheet lists CE, DFS and RCM certifications. The product page lists a power adapter, RJ45 Ethernet cable, RJ11 cable and quick installation guide in the box; the AU datasheet also lists a splitter.
