The TP-Link Deco BE22 (3-pack) is a BE3600 whole home mesh Wi-Fi 7 system of three Deco BE22 units. Each unit is dual band with up to 2882 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, Multi-Link Operation (MLO), 4K-QAM and 160 MHz channels, two gigabit auto-sensing ports, HomeShield security and VPN server and client support, all managed in the Deco app. TP-Link lists whole home coverage of up to 6,500 sq ft for the 3-pack.

Deco BE22 (3-pack) overview

The Deco BE22 (3-pack) brings Wi-Fi 7 (IEEE 802.11be) to a whole home mesh system made of three Deco BE22 units. TP-Link rates each unit as BE3600, with Wi-Fi speeds of 2882 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz using 802.11be, and backward compatibility with 802.11ax/ac/n/a on 5 GHz and 802.11ax/n/b/g on 2.4 GHz. The advanced Wi-Fi 7 features listed are Multi-Link Operation (MLO), 160 MHz channels, 4K-QAM and Multi-RUs, and TP-Link describes Wi-Fi 7 as offering accelerated throughput, lower latency, stronger anti-jamming and higher efficiency. Capacity is rated as very high: the dual-band design distributes devices to different bands, OFDMA communicates with multiple Wi-Fi 7 clients simultaneously, and four streams provide bandwidth for connected devices. For the 3-pack, TP-Link lists whole home coverage of up to 6,500 sq ft, and says the system can connect over 150 devices; that device figure is based on laboratory test data in which devices on the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz bands ran simultaneous applications such as 4K, 1080p and 720p video, file downloads, web browsing, IP cameras and other IoT devices in the same room. TP-Link notes that actual throughput, coverage and connected devices are not guaranteed and vary with internet service provider factors, network conditions, client limitations, building materials, obstacles, traffic and client location. Each unit carries four high-performance internal antennas that form a signal-boosting array to cover more directions and large areas.

Backhaul is where TP-Link puts much of its emphasis. Through its self-developed technology, the Deco BE22 can connect wireless and wired backhaul with each unit simultaneously, and with Wi-Fi 7 MLO the combined wireless and wired backhaul aggregation flow rate is increased, which TP-Link says improves overall throughput, reduces latency and delivers broader coverage with more stable connections. Optional Ethernet backhaul links the Deco units for seamless coverage. Mesh features listed in the comparison table include IEEE 802.11k/v/r mesh protocol support, true seamless roaming, Adaptive Path Selection, band steering, AP steering and self-healing, and the AI-Driven Mesh intelligently learns the network environment. Deco BE22 is compatible with every other Deco model to form a mesh network, so coverage can be expanded later by adding more Decos. TP-Link adds that use of Wi-Fi 7, Wi-Fi 6 and features such as MLO, 4K-QAM, Multi-RUs, OFDMA and MU-MIMO requires clients to also support the corresponding features.

Each unit has two 1.0 Gbps Ethernet ports with WAN/LAN auto-sensing, plus a reset button and a WPS button, and the system runs in Router Mode or Access Point Mode. Security comes from an SPI firewall, access control and the built-in HomeShield service, with real-time IoT protection, a malicious site blocker, an intrusion prevention system, DDoS attack prevention and a home network scanner listed in the specifications. Wi-Fi encryption covers WPA-Personal, WPA2-Personal and WPA3-Personal, and you can set up a separate network for IoT devices with IoT network and device isolation. The Deco BE22 can act as an OpenVPN, PPTP or L2TP/IPSec VPN server and as a client for the same three types, so home devices can reach remote VPN servers without installing VPN software on each one, while VPN and ordinary internet connections run at the same time. TP-Link notes that HomeShield includes both basic and advanced features, and the advanced features require a paid subscription.

Setup and management use the Deco app, which TP-Link says can blanket your home in Wi-Fi in three easy steps and lets you see every connected device, prioritise your own and set up a guest network, at home or away. Guest networks are available on both 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz with effective time and bandwidth control. HomeShield parental controls listed include YouTube restriction, SafeSearch, custom profiles, a professional content filter library, Family Time, Bedtime, Off Time, Time Rewards, Pause the Internet and weekly and monthly reports. Other software features include reboot schedule, Tapo/Kasa onboarding, static routing, node and band connection preference, QoS by device, IPTV (IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge, tag VLAN), port forwarding, UPnP, TP-Link DDNS, OTA firmware upgrades, IPv4 and IPv6, and voice control with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. The box contains three Deco BE22 units, one RJ45 Ethernet cable, three power adapters and a quick installation guide. TP-Link notes the system works with any internet service provider and modem, although some users may need an extra modem compatible with their provider, and actual speed can be limited by the Ethernet WAN or LAN port rate and the network cable. Each unit measures 150 x 150 x 62 mm and operates at 0 to 40 degrees C. ARC IP Networks supplies the Deco BE22 (3-pack) from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
