The TP-Link VIGI NVR1016H is a compact 16-channel network video recorder that accepts sixteen IP cameras at up to 8MP with a 16-window live view. It has 80 Mbps incoming and 60 Mbps outgoing bandwidth, one SATA bay for a drive of up to 10 TB (not included), HDMI and VGA outputs, two-way audio and H.265+, in the same 246.2 x 148.2 x 45 mm chassis as the VIGI NVR1004H and NVR1008H.

VIGI NVR1016H overview

The VIGI NVR1016H brings sixteen channels to TP-Link's compact VIGI recorder chassis, measuring 246.2 x 148.2 x 45 mm and weighing 0.6 kg. It accepts 16 channels of IP video at up to 8MP, with live view layouts of one, four, six, eight, nine or sixteen windows, and TP-Link describes 16-channel real-time live view with sharp image definition up to 8MP. Incoming bandwidth is 80 Mbps and outgoing 60 Mbps, the same as the 4- and 8-channel models in this series; the NVR2016H, by comparison, lists 160 Mbps. Decoding capability is listed as one channel at 8MP, two at 4MP or four at 2MP, and the specification table lists 16-channel synchronous playback.

TP-Link headlines 24/7 continuous recording, storing up to 10 TB of footage on one SATA hard drive. The drive is not included, and TP-Link notes a hard disk drive must be installed for operation. TP-Link quotes 720 days of video on 10 TB, a figure based on laboratory testing with a 3MP VIGI camera; actual performance varies with the amount of activity recorded, resolution and other variables. Footage can be found by date, event type and tag, and replayed at variable speeds. Record modes are manual, scheduled and motion detection, with instant, regular, tag and event playback and regular or video clip backup.

Connections are one RJ-45 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port, two USB 2.0 ports, one audio input and one audio output for two-way audio with voice intercom, HDMI and VGA. There are no PoE ports, so cameras are powered by a separate PoE switch, and no alarm terminals. The specification table lists HDMI output up to 3840 x 2160 at 30 Hz, but a second row on the same page lists HDMI/VGA output resolutions only up to 1920 x 1080 at 60 Hz, so check TP-Link's current datasheet if 4K output matters. HDMI and VGA output run simultaneously. TP-Link also notes some devices may be incompatible with the USB ports, such as a wireless mouse.

The recorder supports H.265+, H.265, H.264+ and H.264 and lists ONVIF and CGI interoperability; TP-Link says some features may operate sub-optimally with other brands and recommends VIGI cameras for best performance. The dedicated VIGI app provides remote monitoring, with Android, iOS and Chrome, Firefox and Edge access. Alarm detection covers motion, video tampering, line-crossing, intrusion, region entering and exiting, object abandoned or removed, vehicle and human detection, plus video loss, IP conflict, disk and login exceptions. Power is a 12 V 1.5 A DC adapter with 4.25 W maximum consumption without a disk. The package contains the recorder, power adapter, HDD screws and a quick installation guide.
