The TP-Link SM5220-1M (TL-SM5220-1M) is an Omada 1 metre 10G SFP+ direct attach cable. It is a passive twin-ax cable assembly with an SFP+ connector on each end, driving 10 Gigabit Ethernet over 1 m. TP-Link positions it as a cost-effective way to connect devices within a rack or across adjacent racks. The conductor is silver-plated copper, and it is rated for 0 to 70 °C operation.

SM5220-1M overview

The SM5220-1M is TP-Link's Omada 1 Meter 10G SFP+ Direct Attach Cable, hardware version V1, also listed by TP-Link Australia as TL-SM5220-1M. A direct attach cable, or DAC, replaces a pair of optical transceivers and a fibre patch lead with a single assembly: the SM5220-1M is a passive twin-ax cable of 1 metre with an SFP+ connector permanently fitted to each end. Each end plugs into an SFP+ port, giving a 10 Gbps link without separate transceivers.

TP-Link's highlights for the SM5220-1M are a 10G SFP+ connector on both sides and the ability to drive 10 Gigabit Ethernet over a 1 m distance. The data rate is 10 Gbps and the maximum cable length is 1 m. TP-Link describes it as suitable for short distances and as a cost-effective way to connect within racks and across adjacent racks. The conductor is silver-plated copper.

Physically, each plug measures 57.5 x 13.55 x 8.55 mm (2.26 x 0.53 x 0.34 in), and the overall assembly length is 1,000 mm (39.37 in). Because the length is fixed, measure the path between the two ports before ordering: 1 m is right for adjacent ports in the same rack or between neighbouring rack units, while a longer run needs a longer DAC or an optical link. The environmental rating is 0 to 70 °C for operation and -40 to 80 °C for storage, with 10 to 90% RH non-condensing operating humidity and 5 to 90% RH non-condensing storage humidity.

Using a DAC rather than two transceivers and a patch lead also simplifies spares and cabling inside a rack: there is one part per link, nothing to clean or align, and the connectors are matched at the factory. The trade-off is reach and flexibility. The SM5220-1M is fixed at 1 m, so it suits ports that sit close together, such as a switch uplink to the switch directly above or below it, or a switch to a server in the same or the next rack. Routes longer than 1 m, or runs between rooms, need a longer cable assembly or an optical module and fibre.

The SM5220-1M is an SFP+ to SFP+ cable, so check that both ends of the link are SFP+ ports running at 10 Gbps and confirm compatibility with the equipment at each end. For 25 Gbps SFP28 ports, the SM6220-1M is the matching 1 m SFP28 DAC, and for 100G QSFP28 ports there is the SM9220-1M.
