The TP-Link TL-SL1218P is a 16-port 10/100 Mbps + 2-port gigabit rackmount switch with PoE+ on all sixteen 10/100 ports and a 150 W PoE budget. It adds a combo gigabit SFP slot, Extend Mode for up to 250 m of PoE and data, Priority Mode on ports 1–8 and Isolation Mode on ports 1–16, and TP-Link describes it as plug and play.

TL-SL1218P overview

The TL-SL1218P is TP-Link's professional 16-port 10/100 Mbps + 2-port gigabit rackmount switch with 16-port PoE+. Ports 1 to 16 are 10/100 Mbps RJ45 PoE+ ports compliant with IEEE 802.3af/at, supporting up to 30 W on each port, with a total PoE power budget of 150 W. TP-Link lists a wide range of applications for it, such as surveillance, offices, dormitories and small businesses, and says it is compatible with IP cameras, access points, IP phones, computers and printers; non-PoE wired devices such as PCs, printers and IPTV also work. Alongside these there are two 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports and one combo gigabit SFP slot that accepts 1000BASE-X multi-mode or single-mode fibre modules. TP-Link describes the switch as plug and play.

Surveillance is the scenario TP-Link highlights most. With Extend Mode enabled, PoE power and data transmission reach up to 250 m, which TP-Link says suits IP camera deployment in large areas. One-touch Priority Mode gives ports 1 to 8 higher priority so that sensitive applications such as video monitoring in critical areas keep their quality. Isolation Mode divides traffic for ports 1 to 16 with one click to avoid snooping and tampering, and TP-Link says this lets the switch isolate broadcast storms, improving LAN security and data transmission. The two gigabit RJ45 ports and the combo SFP slot are there, in TP-Link's words, to keep streaming smooth even when 16 HD IP cameras work simultaneously. PoE Auto Recovery covers ports 1 to 16.

Performance figures are 7.2 Gbps switching capacity, a 5.36 Mpps packet forwarding rate, an 8K MAC address table with auto-learning and auto-aging, and 10 KB jumbo frames, with store-and-forward transmission and IEEE 802.3x flow control. Copper cabling is rated to 100 m for 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX and 1000BASE-T on the listed UTP or STP categories. The power supply is rated 100 to 240 V AC at 50/60 Hz. Maximum power consumption is 10.75 W with no powered devices and 172.8 W with 150 W of PDs connected, and maximum heat dissipation ranges from 36.55 to 592.55 BTU/h.

Physically the TL-SL1218P is a 440 x 180 x 44 mm rackmount switch with a durable metal casing and two fans. TP-Link says its professional heat dissipation design supports a wide operating temperature of 0 to 50 degrees C; storage is rated from -40 to 70 degrees C, with 10 to 90% RH non-condensing operating humidity. It has a physical security lock, and certifications are CE and FCC. The box contains the switch, a power cable, an installation guide and two mounting brackets with fittings. ARC IP Networks supplies the TL-SL1218P from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
