The TP-Link TL-SF1016DS is a 16-port 10/100 Mbps unmanaged switch in a 13-inch steel case that sits on a desk or mounts in a rack. All 16 RJ45 ports auto-negotiate and support auto MDI/MDIX, the non-blocking architecture gives 3.2 Gbps switching capacity and a 2.38 Mpps forwarding rate, and it runs fanless from an internal 100-240 V power supply with TP-Link's energy-efficient Green Technology.

TL-SF1016DS overview

The TL-SF1016DS is TP-Link's 16-port 10/100 Mbps desktop/rackmount switch. TP-Link describes it as a high-performance, low-cost and easy-to-use way to upgrade an older network to 100 Mbps, and positions it as very cost-effective for environments of fewer than 16 users. It has sixteen 10/100 Mbps RJ45 ports, and every port supports auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX: auto-negotiation senses the link speed of each connected device (10 or 100 Mbps) and adjusts for compatibility and optimal performance, while auto MDI/MDIX removes the need for crossover cables, so there is no need to worry about the cable type. It supports IEEE 802.3i, 802.3u and 802.3x. As an unmanaged switch there is nothing to configure: you plug in the power cord and network cables and it starts switching, learning MAC addresses automatically.

Performance comes from a non-blocking switching architecture that forwards and filters packets at full wire speed for maximum throughput. TP-Link lists a switching capacity of 3.2 Gbps, a packet forwarding rate of 2.38 Mpps, an 8K MAC address table, 2 Mb of buffer memory and store-and-forward transmission. To keep traffic flowing under load, IEEE 802.3x flow control works in full-duplex mode and backpressure works in half-duplex mode, which TP-Link says alleviates congestion and keeps the switch working reliably. Network media are UTP category 3, 4 or 5 cable for 10BASE-T and category 5, 5e or above for 100BASE-TX, both up to 100 m.

The switch is built into a standard 13-inch steel case with a safety-certified internal power supply, so there is no external power brick, and TP-Link calls the combination a robust design. It runs from 100-240 V AC at 50/60 Hz and is fanless for silent operation. TP-Link's Green Technology automatically adjusts power consumption according to link status and cable length, which TP-Link says saves up to 75% of power, and the maximum power consumption is just 2.06 W at 220 V, with a maximum heat dissipation of 7.03 BTU/h. The switch complies with RoHS, and TP-Link notes that most of the packaging material can be recycled. TP-Link also lists physical security lock support.

For installation, the TL-SF1016DS can sit on a desk or shelf on the included rubber feet, or be mounted in a rack with the included rackmount kit. It measures 294 x 180 x 44 mm and is rated for operation from 0 °C to 40 °C at 10% to 90% non-condensing humidity, with storage from -40 °C to 70 °C. Certifications are FCC, CE and RoHS. In the box are the 16-port switch, a power cord, an installation guide, a rackmount kit and rubber feet. ARC IP Networks supplies the TL-SF1016DS from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
