The TP-Link Tapo C420 is a wire-free, battery-powered 2K QHD (2560 x 1440) security camera for indoor or outdoor use. It has a removable rechargeable battery rated for up to 180 days in TP-Link's testing, a starlight sensor with full-colour night vision and 15 m IR, a 113° viewing angle, smart AI detection of people, pets and vehicles, a light and sound alarm, two-way audio and an IP65 rating. Local recording uses a microSD card in a Tapo H200 hub, sold separately.

Tapo C420 overview

The Tapo C420 is TP-Link's smart wire-free security camera. With no power or network cables to run, TP-Link says you can place it almost anywhere inside or outside, from a wall bracket to simply setting it on a table. It records 2K QHD video at 2560 x 1440, which TP-Link describes as 1.7 times more pixels than 1080p for clearer videos and crisper photos, through a 1/3-inch image sensor and an F1.61 lens with a 3.18 mm focal length and a 113° viewing angle. Video is compressed with H.264 at 15 or 20 fps. Power comes from a rechargeable, removable battery using a low-power protocol; TP-Link rates it for up to 180 days, based on its laboratory testing with 10 to 20 triggered events per day, and notes that actual battery life varies with device settings, use and environmental factors. You charge it to 100% (the LED turns green) before installing.

Night recording uses a starlight sensor that TP-Link says captures vivid colour even in low light, and embedded light for full-colour night vision. When colour is not wanted, 850 nm IR LEDs provide night vision up to 15 m. Smart AI detection identifies people, pets and vehicles as well as general motion, so notifications are more relevant, and customisable activity zones let you focus on what matters most. When motion is detected the camera can trigger its light and sound alarm to frighten away unwanted visitors, and the built-in microphone and speaker give two-way audio so you can talk to whoever is at the door through the app. The camera is rated IP65 water and dust resistant for outdoor weather.

Recording is event based: TP-Link notes that a battery-powered camera is not designed for continuous recording and only records motion clips when activity is detected. Clips can be saved to a microSD card of up to 512 GB installed in a Tapo hub, or to Tapo Care, TP-Link's subscription cloud storage service, which also adds snapshot and clip notifications. Both the microSD card and the Tapo H200 hub are purchased separately, and TP-Link says up to four cameras connect to one hub. Setup runs through the Tapo app in minutes: TP-Link's steps are to charge the camera, download the app, make sure your Tapo hub has been added, then turn the camera on and follow the in-app guide. The camera's Wi-Fi is IEEE 802.11b/g/n on 2.4 GHz with WPA/WPA2-PSK security.

The camera measures 110.6 x 64.2 x 64.2 mm and is charged through a USB adapter (5 V, 1 A output). It has a reset/sync button and a system LED. TP-Link rates it for operation from -20 °C to 45 °C at 10% to 90% non-condensing humidity. In the box TP-Link lists the Tapo C420 camera with its battery included, a USB adapter and USB adapter cable, mounting screws, mounting templates, camera brackets and a quick start guide. ARC IP Networks supplies the Tapo C420 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
