The TP-Link TL-PA4010 KIT is an AV600 powerline starter kit that turns your home's existing electrical circuit into a network, with HomePlug AV data transfer rates of up to 600 Mbps over a line length of up to 300 m. Each compact adapter is just 28.5 mm thick, has a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port, a Pair button for 128-bit AES encryption, an AU plug and a Power-Saving Mode, and needs no configuration.

TL-PA4010 KIT overview

The TL-PA4010 KIT is TP-Link's AV600 powerline starter kit. TP-Link says it transforms your home's existing electrical circuit into a high-speed network, with no new wires, easy plug-and-play operation and no configuration required. Using HomePlug AV technology, the kit provides stable, high-speed data transfer rates of up to 600 Mbps on a line length of up to 300 metres (1000 feet) over existing electrical wiring. TP-Link positions that speed for heavy-bandwidth applications such as HD streaming, online gaming and large file downloads. The 600 Mbps figure is a theoretical maximum channel data transfer rate, and TP-Link notes the actual rate varies with the network environment, including distance, network traffic, noise on the electrical wires, building material and construction, the quality of the electrical installation and other adverse conditions. Supported standards and protocols are HomePlug AV, IEEE 802.3 and IEEE 802.3u, with OFDM modulation.

Powerline works in pairs or larger groups. TP-Link notes the adapters must be deployed in sets of two or more: plug one internet-connected adapter into a nearby power outlet, then connect additional adapters to PCs, laptops, internet TVs or other networked devices with an Ethernet cable. Each adapter has one 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port for that connection. TP-Link states the kit is compatible with all HomePlug AV and AV2 standard powerline adapters, although TP-Link adds that it may not be compatible with routers or gateways whose firmware has been altered, is based on open source programs, or is non-standard or outdated.

Setup is three steps on TP-Link's page: plug the adapter into the power outlet, connect the device to the adapter with the network cable, and press the Pair buttons. Pressing the Pair button on the adapters sets up a powerline network within minutes, complete with 128-bit AES encryption for network security and data protection, and TP-Link recommends doing so. Each adapter shows its status on three LEDs: Power, Powerline and Ethernet. The housing is a miniature design that TP-Link says is much smaller than its legacy mini 600 Mbps powerline products; at just 28.5 mm thick it nearly blends in completely in front of a power outlet. Each adapter measures 65 x 52 x 28.5 mm and has an AU plug. Unlike TP-Link's TL-PA4010P KIT, this model has no integrated power socket, so the outlet it plugs into is used by the adapter.

For energy use, TP-Link's patented Power-Saving Mode automatically reduces power consumption by up to 85%. That saving takes effect when your appliances are disconnected or turned off, and TP-Link notes actual power saving varies with network conditions and environments. Power consumption is listed as 4.60 W maximum, 4.26 W typical and 0.88 W in standby (220 V / 50 Hz). The listed system requirements are Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP and 2000, Mac and Linux. The adapters operate from 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity and carry CE and FCC certification. TP-Link's package contents are the powerline Ethernet adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
