The TP-Link TL-MR100-Outdoor is a 4G LTE router in an IP65 weatherproof enclosure that also broadcasts 300 Mbps 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. With a nano SIM it delivers LTE downloads of up to 150 Mbps and uploads of up to 50 Mbps for up to 32 devices, and it runs from PoE or a 12 V DC supply on a pole, wall or window mount, with lightning and ESD protection.

TL-MR100-Outdoor overview

The TL-MR100-Outdoor takes the idea of TP-Link's TL-MR100 4G router outside. Instead of sitting on a shelf indoors, it mounts on a pole, a wall or a window where the 4G signal is stronger, and its enclosure is rated IP65 against dust and water. TP-Link says it was engineered for extreme environments: it operates from -30 °C to 60 °C and has 6 kV lightning protection and 15 kV ESD protection (lab-tested; TP-Link notes the CE test levels are lower). Insert an activated nano SIM card without a PIN lock and it provides internet access with LTE downloads of up to 150 Mbps and uploads of up to 50 Mbps.

The 4G modem supports FDD-LTE B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20 and B28 (2100, 1800, 850, 2600, 900, 800 and 700 MHz) and TDD-LTE B38, B40 and B41 (2600, 2300 and 2500 MHz), with 3G DC-HSPA+, HSPA and UMTS on B1, B5 and B8. Two detachable LTE antennas handle the cellular side. Unlike many outdoor CPEs, it also has its own Wi-Fi: 2.4 GHz IEEE 802.11b/g/n at up to 300 Mbps for up to 32 devices, so it can cover a yard, a worksite or a rural property directly, with WPA/WPA2 and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK security, a wireless schedule and a 2.4 GHz guest network.

Power and cabling are kept to one cable. The single 100 Mbps WAN/LAN port accepts PoE in, and TP-Link's specification lists 24 V 0.5 A passive PoE and 44-57 V 0.35 A 802.3af PoE, alongside a 12 V 1 A DC input; the overview also mentions 802.3at PoE and a solar power system as options. The box includes a PoE adapter and a 10 m RJ45 Ethernet cable, so you can run power and data from indoors to the mounting point and connect an indoor router or switch to the same cable. The port also works as a WAN, so the router can run in Wireless Router mode from a wired connection.

Setup uses the intuitive web interface or the TP-Link Tether app on Android or iOS, which also handles parental controls and access control. Other features include DoS protection, an IPv4 SPI firewall, IP and MAC address binding, DHCP with address reservation, ALG, virtual server, port triggering, UPnP and DMZ, TP-Link, DynDns and NO-IP dynamic DNS, IPv4 and IPv6, and local and remote management. The unit measures 226.6 x 100 x 54.7 mm. In the box are the TL-MR100-Outdoor unit, a 10 m RJ45 Ethernet cable, a PoE adapter, an AC power cord, a quick installation guide and window, pole and wall mounting kits.
