The TP-Link MC100CM is an Omada 10/100 Mbps multi-mode media converter that converts 100BASE-FX fibre to 100BASE-TX copper media or vice versa. It complies with IEEE 802.3i and 802.3u, has 2 x 100M SC/UPC fibre ports and 1 x 10/100M RJ45 port with auto-MDI/MDIX, and works at 1310 nm on both transmit and receive. TP-Link lists fibre distance up to 2 km over multi-mode fibre, auto-negotiation of half/full duplex, IEEE 802.3x full-duplex flow control and half-duplex backpressure. Maximum power consumption is 1.19 W from a 9 V / 0.6 A adapter, and it can be used standalone or in the MC1400 chassis.

The TP-Link MC100CM is an Omada 10/100 Mbps multi-mode media converter. It converts 100BASE-FX fibre to 100BASE-TX copper and back, with SC/UPC fibre connections and one 10/100 Mbps RJ45 port, working at 1310 nm for up to 2 km over multi-mode fibre. It supports full-duplex flow control and half-duplex backpressure, draws 1.19 W from a 9 V / 0.6 A adapter, and works standalone or in TP-Link's MC1400 chassis.

MC100CM overview

The MC100CM is TP-Link's Omada 10/100 Mbps multi-mode media converter. TP-Link describes it as a media converter designed to convert 100BASE-FX fibre to 100BASE-TX copper media or vice versa, built to the IEEE 802.3u 10/100BASE-TX and 100BASE-FX standards (with IEEE 802.3i listed for 10BASE-T). It is designed for multi-mode fibre cable using the SC-type connector, and TP-Link's interface listing is two 100M SC/UPC ports and one 10/100M RJ45 port with auto-MDI/MDIX. The fibre side uses separate transmit and receive connections rather than a single-strand WDM link, and TP-Link says it works at 1310 nm on both transmitting and receiving data, at a full wire-speed forwarding rate.

Distance is the main thing to plan around. TP-Link lists fibre extension of up to 2 km on multi-mode fibre with the MC100CM, which suits links inside a campus, between floors or across a car park, where Ethernet copper would run out at 100 m. On the copper side, 10BASE-T is rated over 2-pair UTP or STP of Category 3 or above up to 100 m, and 100BASE-T over 2-pair UTP or STP of Category 5 or above up to 100 m. The converter auto-negotiates half-duplex or full-duplex transfer mode, and supports full-duplex flow control (IEEE 802.3x) and half-duplex flow control (backpressure). For longer distances TP-Link's single-mode converters are the better fit; the Gigabit MC210CS, for example, is rated to 20 km on single-mode fibre.

TP-Link notes that the MC100CM can be used as a standalone device with no chassis required, or with TP-Link's MC1400 chassis, and that it offers auto-MDI/MDI-X on the TX port and auto-negotiation of duplex mode. Three LEDs, PWR, FX Link/Act and TP Link/Act, show power and activity on the fibre and twisted-pair sides separately, which makes it easy to see which side of a link has dropped. The converter is powered by a 9 V / 0.6 A adapter, supplied in the box, and its maximum power consumption is listed as 1.19 W.

The MC100CM measures 94.5 x 73.0 x 27.0 mm (3.7 x 2.9 x 1.1 in). Its product page lists an operating temperature of 0 to 40 degrees C and storage from -40 to 70 degrees C, with 10 to 90% operating and 5 to 90% storage humidity, non-condensing. Safety and emission approvals are FCC, CE and RoHS. The AU product page shows hardware version 6.30. The box contains the MC100CM, a power adapter and an installation guide. Check that the fibre already installed is multi-mode with SC connectors before choosing this model; single-mode fibre needs a single-mode converter.
