The TP-Link Deco X73-DSL (3-pack) is an AX5400 whole home mesh Wi-Fi 6 system made of one Deco X73-DSL modem router and two Deco X73 units. The X73-DSL has a built-in VDSL2/ADSL modem with Super VDSL (profile 35b), two FXS phone ports, four gigabit WAN/LAN ports and USB 3.0; each Deco X73 adds two gigabit ports. Every unit is dual-band Wi-Fi 6 at 4804 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, and TP-Link rates the 3-pack for 4-7+ bedroom houses.

Deco X73-DSL (3-pack) overview

The Deco X73-DSL (3-pack) is not three identical units. TP-Link's package list for the 3-pack is one Deco X73-DSL unit plus two Deco X73 units, with one RJ45 Ethernet cable, two RJ11 DSL cables, one external DSL splitter, three power adapters, a telephony feature guide and a quick installation guide. The Deco X73-DSL is the main unit: TP-Link calls it an AX5400 VDSL whole home mesh Wi-Fi 6 modem router, integrating a VDSL/ADSL modem, Wi-Fi 6 and TP-Link Mesh technology so that, in TP-Link's words, it saves you a fortune on DSL modem equipment. The two Deco X73 units are the mesh satellites. They have no DSL port, and TP-Link marks the DSL working mode and the PPPoA, IPoA and DS-Lite WAN types as available on the Deco X73-DSL only, while Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, L2TP and PPTP are available on all units. TP-Link sizes the Wi-Fi range of the 3-pack for 4-7+ bedroom houses, against 3-5 bedroom houses for the 2-pack and 1-3 bedroom houses for the 1-pack.

On the DSL side, TP-Link says the Deco X73-DSL features Super VDSL (VDSL2 profile 35b), the latest generation of DSL technology, with downstream increased by up to 350 Mbps, which it describes as 3.5x faster than its VDSL2 predecessor; its comparison graphic sets Super VDSL at 350 Mbps against 100 Mbps for VDSL2 and 24 Mbps for ADSL2+. The integrated DSL port also supports all standard DSL connections, and the standards listed are ITU G.993.2 up to profile 35b, G.993.5 (G.vector), G.998.4 (G.INP), full-rate ANSI T1.413 Issue 2, G.992.1 (G.DMT), G.992.2 (G.Lite), G.992.3 for ADSL2 and G.992.5 for ADSL2+. TP-Link notes that actual DSL downlink speeds vary between households, depending on the internet service level, real-time network capacity, equipment and client limitations and environmental factors. The X73-DSL also carries two FXS phone ports for VoIP telephony, and the port graphic lists 250 minutes of voicemail storage.

Wireless is dual-band Wi-Fi 6: IEEE 802.11ax/ac/n/a on 5 GHz at 4804 Mbps and 802.11ax/n/b/g on 2.4 GHz at 574 Mbps, with MU-MIMO, OFDMA, four streams, beamforming and four internal antennas. TP-Link's graphics add 1024-QAM and an 11% faster symbol rate, coverage up to 2,900 ft2/270 m2 for the Deco X73-DSL with BSS Colour and beamforming, and connections for up to 200 devices, based on TP-Link testing of multiple applications in March 2021. In this 3-pack, wireless links and optional Ethernet backhaul join the three Decos into one network with a single Wi-Fi name, and the mesh supports IEEE 802.11k/v/r roaming, adaptive path selection and self-healing; TP-Link notes that clients need to support 802.11k/v/r and may need additional setup. For wired devices, the Deco X73-DSL has four gigabit WAN/LAN auto-sensing ports and a USB 3.0 port for local storage, a media server and FTP access, and each Deco X73 has two gigabit auto-sensing ports, which gives the 3-pack eight gigabit Ethernet ports in total. Only one port can serve as the WAN at a time.

Setup in the 3-pack starts at the phone line: connect the Deco X73-DSL to the splitter, or straight to the phone jack if you won't use the traditional landline phone service, power it on, then download the Deco app and follow the in-app directions. TP-Link says each additional Deco simply needs to be powered on to join the network automatically, so the two Deco X73 units go wherever coverage is weak. Security comes from an SPI firewall, access control and HomeShield, which TP-Link lists with real-time IoT protection, a malicious site blocker, an intrusion prevention system, DDoS attack prevention and a home network scanner; HomeShield includes the free Basic Plan and fees apply for the Pro Plan. WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 Personal encryption and 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz guest networks are listed, along with HomeShield QoS and QoS by device, IPTV (IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge, tag VLAN), port forwarding, UPnP, TP-Link DDNS, OTA firmware upgrades, IPv4 and IPv6, and Alexa voice control. The Deco X73-DSL measures 130 x 123 x 210.5 mm and each Deco X73 measures 110 x 110 x 114 mm; both are RCM certified and operate from 0 to 40 C.
