The TP-Link Deco X50-5G(1-pack) is a 5G AX3000 whole home mesh Wi-Fi 6 gateway: insert a Nano-SIM and it provides internet over 5G or 4G, with TP-Link quoting 5G speeds up to 4.67 Gbps. It has AX3000 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (2402 Mbps on 5 GHz, 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz), one 2.5 Gbps and two gigabit WAN/LAN ports, two external SMA-F antenna connectors, HomeShield security, and works with any other Deco to extend the mesh.

Deco X50-5G(1-pack) overview

The Deco X50-5G puts a 5G cellular modem, a Wi-Fi 6 router and a Deco mesh node into one unit. Insert a Nano-SIM and the Deco connects to the mobile network; TP-Link says it supports Sub-6 GHz 5G with download speeds up to 4.67 Gbps and latency as low as 1 ms, and the working modes listed are 5G/4G Router, Router and Access Point. TP-Link's page pitches it at places where fixed broadband is slow or awkward to install, such as holiday homes, farms, short-term rentals, pop-up venues and temporary shops, and describes the access options as 4G, 5G or fixed-line internet. TP-Link is clear that 5G downlink speeds vary between households, depending on the service level, real-time network capacity, equipment and client limitations and the environment, and the page notes availability is based on region.

For the cellular side, TP-Link lists 5G bands N1, N3, N5, N7, N8, N20, N28, N38, N40, N41, N75, N76, N77 and N78, 4G FDD-LTE bands B1, B3, B5, B7, B8, B20, B28 and B32, 4G TDD-LTE bands B38, B40, B41, B42 and B43, and 3G bands B1, B5 and B8. Inside are eight LTE/5G antennas and three Wi-Fi antennas, and the back panel adds two external SMA-F antenna connectors for 5G/4G/3G, so an external antenna can be fitted where the indoor signal is weak. The Nano-SIM slot sits on the rear panel next to the reset button and power input. Check that your mobile carrier's network uses bands on this list before relying on the X50-5G as your main connection.

Wi-Fi is AX3000 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 with 802.11ax on both bands: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, plus MU-MIMO, OFDMA, 1024-QAM and four streams. TP-Link rates one unit for 1-3 bedroom houses and gives 1-pack coverage of up to 2,500 ft² (230 m²), and its page says the X50-5G connects over 150 devices. Wired connections are one 2.5 Gbps port and two gigabit ports, all WAN/LAN auto-sensing; TP-Link notes only one port can serve as the WAN at a time, and that in wireless router mode the Ethernet ports can be used for backup broadband access. That means a fixed-line connection can be plugged in alongside the SIM. The Deco X50-5G is compatible with every other Deco model, so additional Deco units (sold separately) can join it to form one unified mesh network with a single Wi-Fi name, linked wirelessly or with optional Ethernet backhaul.

HomeShield security is built in: an SPI firewall, access control, real-time IoT protection, a malicious site blocker, an intrusion prevention system, DDoS attack prevention and a home network scanner, with HomeShield QoS and QoS by device. HomeShield includes the free Basic Plan, and fees apply for the Pro Plan. Guest networks are available on 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz, and Wi-Fi encryption covers WPA-Personal, WPA2-Personal and WPA3-Personal. Setup is done in the Deco app in three steps, and the app's dashboard shows network status and connected devices at home or away. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant devices can control the X50-5G by voice. Other features include IPTV (IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge, tag VLAN), port forwarding, UPnP, TP-Link DDNS, DHCP address reservation, OTA firmware upgrades and IPv4 and IPv6, with Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, L2TP and PPTP WAN types for fixed-line use. The 1-pack box contains one Deco X50-5G unit, one RJ45 Ethernet cable, one power adapter and a quick installation guide. The unit measures 210.5 x 130 x 123 mm, operates from 0 to 40 °C and is RCM certified. TP-Link AU lists hardware versions V1 to V3, and these specifications follow TP-Link's current product page.
