The TP-Link Tapo S200D is a smart remote dimmer switch for Tapo smart lights. It gives instant control without an app, dims or changes the lighting effect with tap, double-tap and rotate gestures, and comes with a wall plate so it can replace an old plate with screws or stick on with adhesive. It runs on a CR2032 battery and needs a Tapo Hub.

Tapo S200D overview

The Tapo S200D is TP-Link's smart remote dimmer switch, designed to make controlling Tapo smart lights as simple as reaching for a switch. It adds local instant control to your lights, so you, your family or guests can set the light level without opening an app. TP-Link pitches it at living rooms, halls and stairways, where more than one dimmer can control the same light from multiple locations; in TP-Link's words a single-pole dimmer becomes a 3-way or even 4-way dimmer without rewiring.

Each gesture is defined in the Tapo app. TP-Link's default suggestion is a single tap to turn the light on or off, a double tap to change the lighting effect, and rotation to change the brightness or light temperature. You can also design personalised lighting scenes for daily routines or special occasions by customising brightness, then trigger a preset scene that controls multiple lights in one or two taps. TP-Link's summary adds that the switch can control and set multiple smart lights, electronics and other Tapo smart devices.

The S200D needs a Tapo Hub: its page states Tapo Hub Required, and TP-Link explains that connecting it to the Tapo Hub unlocks more versatile settings for Tapo smart lights, with the hub sold separately. The Tapo H200 page lists the S200D among its supported buttons. The switch uses a common CR2032 coin cell, which TP-Link says supports a battery life of over one year, and communicates on 922 MHz.

Three mounting options are covered. Replace an old wall plate with the included plate and screws, stick the button anywhere with the supplied adhesive, or attach the switch without a wall plate to any magnetic surface. TP-Link's installation guide puts the non-slip pad on the back of the button, not on the wall plate, before attaching the button magnetically to the plate. Location label stickers help identify which switch controls what. The S200D measures 86 x 86 x 23.7 mm, operates from 0 to 40 °C, and works with the Tapo app on iOS 10 or later and Android 5.0 or later. In the box are the Tapo S200D, a wall plate, a CR2032 battery, anti-slip tape, double-sided tape and a quick start guide.
