The TP-Link SM9110-SR4 is an Omada 100G/40GBASE-SR4 QSFP28 transceiver for 850 nm multi-mode fibre. It is dual rate (103.125 Gbps and 41.2 Gbps), reaches 70 m on OM3 or 100 m on OM4 at 100G and 100 m on OM3 or 150 m on OM4 at 40G, uses an MTP/MPO-12 connector, supports DDM and is hot-pluggable, drawing at most 1.8 W.

SM9110-SR4 overview

The SM9110-SR4 is TP-Link's Omada 100GBASE-SR4 QSFP28 transceiver. TP-Link describes it as a 100G/40GBASE-SR4 high-performance 850 nm multi-mode QSFP28 transceiver designed to extend transmission distance based on ultra-fast Ethernet connectivity. It is dual rate: 103.125 Gbps (4 x 25.78 Gbps) for 100G Ethernet and 41.2 Gbps (4 x 10.3 Gbps) for 40G Ethernet. Over 50/125 µm multi-mode fibre, maximum cable length at 100G is 70 m on OM3 and 100 m on OM4, and at 40G it is 100 m on OM3 and 150 m on OM4. The optical connector is MTP/MPO-12, and the module is compatible with the 100G/40G Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable 28 (QSFP28) MSA.

Optically, the SM9110-SR4 uses an 850 nm VCSEL transmitter and a PIN receiver, with COB packaging and a built-in CDR (clock and data recovery). Transmitter power is -8.4 to 2.4 dBm at 103.125 Gbps and -7.6 to 2.4 dBm at 41.2 Gbps. Receiver sensitivity is better than -10.3 dBm at 103.125 Gbps and -9.5 dBm at 41.2 Gbps, receiver overload is above 2.4 dBm at both rates, and the extinction ratio is above 2 dB at 100G and 3 dB at 40G. The datasheet also lists an optical budget of more than 1.9 dBm at both 103.125 Gbps and 41.2 Gbps.

Standards and protocols listed are IEEE 802.3bm and IEEE 802.3ba, the QSFP28 MSA, SFF-8665, SFF-8636 and SFF-8436, CPRI and eCPRI, and TCP/IP. The module supports Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) and is hot-pluggable, which TP-Link describes as giving maximum flexibility. It runs from a 3.3 V supply, with maximum power consumption of 1.8 W at 100 Gbps and 1.54 W at 40 Gbps. Regulatory compliance is CE, FCC and RoHS, and the module measures 124 x 18.35 x 11.7 mm.

TP-Link highlights a wide operating temperature: the SM9110-SR4 is rated for 0 to 70 degrees C in operation and -40 to 85 degrees C in storage, with 0 to 85% RH non-condensing humidity for both operation and storage. The package contains the SM9110-SR4 and an installation guide. In summary, it is a QSFP28 SR4 optic for 100G or 40G Ethernet over 50/125 µm OM3 or OM4 multi-mode fibre with an MTP/MPO-12 connector, offering up to 100 m at 100G and 150 m at 40G on OM4, with DDM, hot-plug support and a maximum draw of 1.8 W. ARC IP Networks supplies the SM9110-SR4 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
