The TP-Link SM9220-1M is an Omada 1 metre 100G QSFP28 passive direct attach cable: a passive Twinax cable assembly with a QSFP28 connector on each end, supporting 100 Gbps and 40 Gbps data rates. TP-Link says it suits short-distance transmission of extreme-high-speed data and offers a cost-effective way to connect within racks and across adjacent racks.

SM9220-1M overview

The SM9220-1M is TP-Link's Omada 1 metre 100G QSFP28 direct attach cable. TP-Link describes it as a passive direct attach cable: a passive Twinax cable assembly of 1 metre with a QSFP28 connector on each side. It is suitable for short-distance transmission of extreme-high-speed data at 100 Gbps, and TP-Link says it offers a cost-effective way to connect within racks and across adjacent racks. The connector type is QSFP28 to QSFP28, and the supported data rates are 100 Gbps and 40 Gbps.

The standards TP-Link lists for the SM9220-1M are IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.3ba, IEEE 802.3bj, SFF-8636, SFF-8679 and SFF-8663. The cable type is passive Twinax with silver-plated copper conductors at 30AWG wire gauge, and the jacket material is PVC (OFNR). The cable length, and the maximum cable length, is 1 m, which TP-Link also lists as the transmission distance. The voltage is 3.3 V. The minimum bend radius is 33 mm, which is the figure to respect when routing the cable between ports in a rack.

Each QSFP28 plug measures 72.45 x 18.35 x 13.50 mm (2.85 x 0.72 x 0.53 in), and the overall length of the assembly is 1,000 mm (39.37 in). The cable is hot swappable. TP-Link's feature list for the SM9220-1M is short and specific: 100 Gbps data transmission, a QSFP28 connector on both sides, 1 m transmission distance, a wide operating temperature and hot swappable. As a direct attach cable, the SM9220-1M is a complete assembly: the 1 m passive Twinax cable and the two QSFP28 connectors come as one part, connecting one QSFP28 port to another.

For the environment, TP-Link rates the SM9220-1M for operation from 0 to 70 °C (32 to 158 °F) and storage from -40 to 85 °C (-40 to 185 °F), with operating humidity of 10 to 90% RH non-condensing and storage humidity of 5 to 90% RH non-condensing. When planning, confirm that both devices have QSFP28 ports and that the two ports are within the 1 m length, allowing for the 33 mm minimum bend radius. If your ports are 10G SFP+ rather than QSFP28, TP-Link's SM5220-3M is a 3 m 10G SFP+ direct attach cable; the comparison table below sets the published figures for the two cables side by side. ARC IP Networks supplies the SM9220-1M from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
