The TP-Link S5500-8XF is an Omada Pro 8-port SFP+ L2+ managed switch (hardware V1) with eight full 10 Gbps SFP+ slots and 160 Gbps non-blocking switching capacity. It is a fanless 19-inch rackmount switch with internal AC power, RJ45 and micro-USB console ports, 48 static routes, ERPS, QinQ, sFlow and enterprise security, managed standalone or through an Omada Pro controller.

S5500-8XF overview

The S5500-8XF is TP-Link's Omada Pro 8-port SFP+ L2+ managed switch, listed on TP-Link Australia as hardware version V1. TP-Link describes it as a fully enterprise-level managed switch that lets you easily build a whole 10G network, with eight full 10 Gbps SFP+ slots and 160 Gbps switching capacity. TP-Link calls that capacity non-blocking, so all eight ports can run at line rate at once. It is suited to aggregating 10G uplinks from access switches, connecting servers and storage over fibre or direct attach cables, and linking buildings. TP-Link lists dormitories, apartments, enterprises, campuses and ISPs as target environments. It has no RJ45 data ports and no PoE; management access is through one RJ45 console port and one micro-USB console port.

Performance figures are 160 Gbps switching capacity, a 119.04 Mpps forwarding rate, a 32K MAC address table, a 16 Mbit packet buffer and 9 KB jumbo frames. Physically it is a fanless 440 x 180 x 44 mm 19-inch rack-mountable switch with an internal 100-240 V AC 50/60 Hz supply. Maximum power consumption is just 15.46 W and maximum heat dissipation 52.75 BTU/hr at 220 V / 50 Hz, and it is rated for 0 to 45 C operation and 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity. Certification is CE and FCC. The rackmount kit, rubber feet, power cord and a quick installation guide are included.

For L2+ and L3 functions it supports 16 IPv4/IPv6 interfaces, static routing with 48 static routes, 128 static ARP entries and 512 ARP entries, proxy and gratuitous ARP, a DHCP server and DHCP interface, VLAN and L2 relay. Layer 2 covers static and 802.3ad LACP link aggregation (up to 8 groups of 8 ports), STP/RSTP/MSTP with TC protect, BPDU filter and root protect, port and VLAN-based loopback detection, HOL blocking prevention and port and CPU mirroring. VLAN support scales to 4K groups with 802.1Q, 30 MAC VLAN entries, protocol VLAN, private VLAN, GVRP, port-based and selective QinQ, voice VLAN and OUI-based VLAN. TP-Link also lists ISP features: 802.3ah Ethernet link OAM, L2PT, DLDP, PPPoE ID insertion, sFlow, DDM for monitoring SFP+ optics, and Ethernet Ring Protection Switching (ERPS), which blocks traffic on a single ring link to prevent looping and adds redundancy and up-time protection to the network.

Security includes IP-MAC-Port binding and VLAN binding, port security, storm control, DHCP snooping, an integrated list of common DoS attacks to defend against, L2 to L4 ACLs that deny packets by MAC, IP, TCP/UDP port or VLAN ID, and 802.1X authentication working with a RADIUS or TACACS+ server. QoS leverages IP, MAC, TCP and UDP identifiers with 8 priority queues and SP, WRR or SP+WRR scheduling so voice and video stay smooth even when bandwidth is short. IPv6 support covers dual stack, MLD snooping, IPv6 ACL, DHCPv6 snooping, IPv6 interfaces, PMTU discovery and neighbour discovery. Management options are web GUI, CLI through the console port or telnet, SNMP v1/v2c/v3, RMON, DHCP auto install, dual image and configuration, password recovery and remote packet capture. Integrated into Omada Pro through the Omada Pro software or cloud-based controller, it adds centralised cloud management, the Omada app, Zero-Touch Provisioning (with the cloud-based controller) and Intelligent Anomaly Detection.
