The Mercusys MR84X-Travel is a palm-sized AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 travel router with signal rates of 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It has a 2.5 Gbps WAN port, a gigabit LAN port and a USB 3.0 port, runs in seven modes (Router, USB Tethering, 3G/4G USB Modem, Hotspot, Access Point, Range Extender and Client), works as a VPN client and server with OpenVPN, WireGuard, L2TP/IPSec and PPTP, and is powered over USB Type-C.

MR84X-Travel overview

The MR84X-Travel is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router built for travel. Mercusys describes it as sleek enough to fit in your pocket but durable enough to handle the rigours of travel, and designed in a palm-sized form factor that fits easily into a bag for holidays, business trips or remote work setups. The unit measures 108 x 86.8 x 34 mm (4.25 x 3.42 x 1.34 in) and has two external omni-directional antennas. Its wireless class is AX3000: Mercusys lists signal rates of up to 2402 Mbps on the 5 GHz band and 574 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band, and pitches those speeds at 4K streaming, online meetings and gaming while travelling. These are maximum physical rates derived from the IEEE 802.11 specifications; Mercusys notes that actual throughput, coverage and the number of connected devices vary with network conditions, client limitations and the environment.

The Wi-Fi 6 radio supports 802.11ax/ac/a/b/g/n, a maximum channel width of 160 MHz and 1024-QAM modulation. Mercusys says 160 MHz doubles the channel width for faster connections, 1024-QAM boosts raw speeds by 25% compared to 256-QAM, and a 4x longer OFDM symbol provides increased coverage and 11% faster speeds. OFDMA, MU-MIMO and beamforming are also listed. Mercusys points out that these Wi-Fi 6 features require the client devices to support them too, and that 160 MHz may be unavailable on the 5 GHz band in some countries because of regulatory restrictions. Mercusys rates the router to connect up to 80 devices, and lists 256 MB of flash and 512 MB of DDR memory. Wireless functions include Smart Connect, a wireless schedule, WPS, AP isolation and Airtime Fairness, with WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 security.

Its seven operation modes cover most ways of getting online away from home. Router Mode turns a wired connection into a Wi-Fi network; Hotspot Mode (WISP) connects to public Wi-Fi and creates your own private network; USB Tethering Mode shares a phone's mobile data; 3G/4G USB Modem Mode uses a plugged-in USB modem; and Access Point, Range Extender and Client modes complete the set. Mercusys notes that USB internet sharing depends on the compatibility of the USB modem or mobile device and is not guaranteed to work with every device. The interfaces are one 2.5 Gbps WAN port, one gigabit LAN port and one USB 3.0 port, which also lets you plug in a USB drive and share documents and media across connected devices. Mercusys notes that 2.5 Gbps internet speeds require a compatible service plan and equipment. The datasheet also lists Multi-WAN backup and Multi-WAN load balance.

For privacy on shared networks the MR84X-Travel works as both a VPN client and a VPN server, with OpenVPN, WireGuard, L2TP/IPSec and PPTP, and it supports a kill switch. Other software features include an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz guest networks, parental controls with profiles, time control, pausing the internet and website filtering, QoS by device, IPv4 and IPv6, DDNS (Mercusys, NO-IP and DynDNS), and port forwarding, port triggering, DMZ and UPnP. WAN types are Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP. The router is powered through its USB Type-C port with a 5 V / 3 A supply, and Mercusys says a power bank can keep it running without wall power, while recommending the supplied power adapter to avoid any risk of damage. It has a customisable action button, a WPS/Reset button and a SYS LED with LED control and night mode, and is managed through the Mercusys app on iOS or Android or through its web page.
