The Mercusys MR70X is an AX1800 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router with signal rates of 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It uses OFDMA and MU-MIMO to transmit to several devices at once, four 5 dBi fixed omni-directional antennas with beamforming, WPA3 security and Smart Connect, and has one gigabit WAN port and three gigabit LAN ports, plus Access Point mode, IPTV support and the Mercusys app.

MR70X overview

The MR70X is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) router compatible with 802.11ax/ac/a/b/g/n devices. Mercusys explains that the Wi-Fi 6 standard is designed to boost the average data throughput per user in dense user environments, deliver more simultaneous connections, extend Wi-Fi range and maintain reliable data transmissions as homes add more wireless and smart devices. By combining 1024-QAM with a long OFDM symbol, the MR70X reaches total signal rates of up to 1800 Mbps: 1201 Mbps on the 5 GHz band and 574 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band. Mercusys compares this with a 2x2 Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) router at 1200 Mbps, calling the MR70X 1.5x faster. These are maximum signal rates derived from the IEEE 802.11 specifications; Mercusys notes that actual throughput and coverage depend on the environment, network conditions and client devices.

Wi-Fi 6 also changes how the router shares its bandwidth. With OFDMA, the MR70X can transmit to and from several devices sharing one band at the same time, where Wi-Fi 5 OFDM uses the full channel to serve only one device at a time. MU-MIMO transfers data streams to more devices simultaneously, so other devices are not forced to wait, which improves overall network efficiency. Four 5 dBi fixed omni-directional, high-gain antennas spread the signal through the home, and beamforming detects connected devices and concentrates wireless signal strength towards them to make connections more stable. Smart Connect combines the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands into a single Wi-Fi name (SSID) and helps each device choose the band with the stronger signal and faster speed as you move around the home.

For wired devices the MR70X has one gigabit WAN port and three gigabit LAN ports, so wired connections can make full use of your internet service. WAN types are Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, L2TP and PPTP. As well as router mode, it supports Access Point mode, which extends an existing wired network and makes it wireless. Wireless security is WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK and WPA3 encryption, and router security includes an SPI firewall and IP and MAC address binding. Other features include 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz guest networks, parental controls, Quality of Service that prioritises the devices you select, IPTV support with IGMP Proxy and Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN, IPv6 support, and OpenVPN and PPTP support for a secure VPN connection for remote access. Port forwarding, port triggering, UPnP and DMZ are available under NAT forwarding.

The router can be set up and managed through the Mercusys app on iOS or Android devices, as well as through local and remote management with access control. Mercusys lists transmission power of less than 20 dBm (EIRP) on 2.4 GHz and less than 23 dBm (EIRP) on 5 GHz. The MR70X measures 208.8 x 171.6 x 41.7 mm (8.2 x 6.8 x 1.6 in), has a Reset/WPS button, and is rated for operation from 0 °C to 40 °C at 10% to 90% non-condensing humidity. In the box are the AX1800 Wi-Fi 6 Router MR70X, a power adapter, a Quick Installation Guide and an RJ45 Ethernet cable. Mercusys publishes the MR70X in several hardware versions (V1, V1.20 and V2); the details on this page follow the Mercusys Australia V1 product page.
