The Mercusys MB118-4G is a 300 Mbps 4G LTE router built for outdoor or indoor mounting. Its IP65 enclosure goes where the LTE signal is strongest, a single gigabit PoE port carries both power and data back inside, and the built-in 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi covers up to 32 devices. A PoE injector is included in the box.

MB118-4G overview

The MB118-4G solves a common 4G problem: the strongest signal is often outside, while the devices that need it are inside. Mercusys designed this router for outdoor and indoor installation. You mount it where reception is strongest, on a pole, a wall or a window, then run one Ethernet cable from its PoE port to the building. Mercusys suggests it for outdoor events, backyards, gardens, patios, pools, cafés, barns and sheds.

The enclosure is rated IP65 for dust and water. Mercusys points out that this rating does not cover prolonged immersion or high-pressure water jets, and that the protection can fail if the unit is not installed as the manual describes. The page quotes ±6 kV lightning and ±15 kV ESD protection from controlled laboratory tests; the CE-standard levels it gives are 2 kV differential-mode and 4 kV common-mode surge protection, and 4 kV contact and 8 kV air ESD protection. The operating range is -30 °C to 60 °C, and storage is rated from -40 °C to 70 °C.

Power comes three ways: IEEE 802.3af/at PoE, passive PoE, or the DC adapter. Mercusys quotes up to 100 m of power distance on 802.3af/at PoE and up to 30 m on passive PoE, depending on environment and cable, and recommends Cat5e or better with 24 AWG or thicker copper conductors. The included Ethernet cable is 1.2 m long, so longer runs need a separate cable. A PoE injector is in the box, and the single interface is a gigabit LAN/WAN PoE port.

On the mobile side the router uses LTE Cat 4, rated at up to 150 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload, with maximum speeds subject to local 4G coverage, data plan, network capacity, client limitations and environment. Mercusys's AU page lists the EU band set: FDD-LTE B1/B3/B5/B7/B8/B20/B28, TDD-LTE B38/B40 and HSPA+/UMTS B1/B5/B8. The nano SIM is sold separately and must be activated without a PIN lock; the Quick Installation Guide explains how to unlock a locked SIM. Wi-Fi is 802.11b/g/n on 2.4 GHz at a 300 Mbps maximum signal rate, for up to 32 clients (16 recommended), secured with WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK and with a 2.4 GHz guest network.

Configuration is through the Mercusys app on Android or iOS or the web interface. The software offers 3G/4G Router and Wireless Router modes, 4G Preferred, 4G Only and 3G Only cellular modes, APN profiles, data statistics and a data limit, SMS, a DHCP server with address reservation, NAT forwarding, IPv4 and IPv6, DynDNS and NO-IP, parental controls, an IPv4 SPI firewall and IPv6 firewall, access control, service filtering, IP and MAC binding, TR-069, cloud firmware upgrades and remote management. The unit measures 230.9 x 97.2 x 54.7 mm, has a reset button and power, internet, LAN, WLAN and three signal LEDs, and runs from 12 V / 1 A when not powered over Ethernet.
