The Mercusys MA72XH is an AX1800 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 USB adapter with two external high-gain antennas. Mercusys lists 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, MU-MIMO and OFDMA support, WPA3-SAE and a USB 3.0 connection. Built-in Windows drivers on the adapter make setup quick, and it supports Windows 11 and 10 in 32-bit and 64-bit editions. It is Wi-Fi only, with no Bluetooth listed.

MA72XH overview

The MA72XH is Mercusys's AX1800 high-gain wireless dual-band USB adapter, built around the IEEE 802.11ax wireless standard. Mercusys says it offers strong, uninterrupted Wi-Fi for everything from HD video streaming to lag-free gaming and web browsing, with signal rates of up to 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. It labels the 5 GHz band for faster speed and the 2.4 GHz band for stronger penetration, and lists streaming, gaming and efficient office work as typical uses. The page claims full support for 802.11ax/ac/a/b/g/n. Keep in mind that the quoted rates are physical maximums from the IEEE 802.11 standard; the throughput and coverage you see depend on network conditions, the access point, and obstacles, building materials and traffic in your space.

Throughput gains come from MU-MIMO and OFDMA. When paired with a router that supports both, the MA72XH receives data simultaneously with other devices on the same network stream instead of waiting its turn, which Mercusys says results in minimal to no lag for videos and games. These features, Wi-Fi 6 itself and 1024-QAM require the access point to support them too. Reception sensitivity is published as -75 dBm (11a 54 Mbps), -85 dBm (VHT80 MCS0) and -62 dBm (VHT80 MCS9) on 5 GHz, and -74 dBm (11g 54 Mbps) and -70 dBm (HT40 MCS7) on 2.4 GHz.

Range is handled by two external high-gain antennas. Mercusys says they extend your router's reach with enhanced directional precision, keeping wireless links faster and more stable over longer distances than a traditional antenna. The adapter plugs into a USB 3.0 port, which Mercusys rates at up to 10 times the transfer speed of USB 2.0 while staying backwards compatible; paired with 802.11ax Wi-Fi it is pitched at HD streaming, online gaming and large downloads. The body measures 77 x 45.2 x 12.4 mm.

Setup relies on the Windows drivers built into the adapter: Mercusys says you simply connect the MA72XH and have fast wireless networking in seconds, without a CD drive. Windows 11 and Windows 10 are supported, 32-bit and 64-bit. Mercusys flags that functionality may be restricted on some operating systems and platforms, and that the adapter's drivers may need updating after an OS update, with current drivers in its download centre. Security includes WPA, WPA2, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK and WPA3-SAE; using WPA3 requires a WPA3 access point and possibly a driver upgrade from the Mercusys website. The package contains the AX1800 High-Gain Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter (MA72XH) and a quick installation guide.
