The Cisco IE-3400-8T2S-E in depth

Advanced modular industrial switching

The Catalyst IE3400 Rugged Series is Cisco's advanced compact modular DIN-rail switch for industrial and extended enterprise sites. The IE-3400-8T2S-E starts with 8 copper Gigabit ports and 2 Gigabit SFP uplinks, and one expansion module takes it to as many as 26 Gigabit ports.

Zero-loss redundancy and segmentation

On top of REP and PROFINET MRP rings, the IE3400 supports PRP, HSR and Device Level Ring for applications that cannot tolerate packet loss, such as substation automation. SGT/SGACL brings Cisco TrustSec segmentation to the plant floor when the base switch is paired with IEM-3400 modules.

Hardened, secure and edge-ready

It is fanless, runs from redundant DC inputs and carries industrial, substation, railway and hazardous location certifications. Cisco IOS XE adds secure boot, MACsec-128 and NetFlow, while IOx can host Cisco Cyber Vision, Secure Equipment Access or your own Docker applications.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the Cisco IE-3400-8T2S-E from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.

Both are modular DIN-rail switches with 8 GE copper and 2 GE SFP base ports. The IE3400 adds PRP, HSR, Device Level Ring and SGT/SGACL, and Cisco lists 36W consumption for the IE-3400-8T2S versus 23W for the IE-3300-8T2S.

The base unit has 10 ports. With a 16-port module such as the IEM-3300-16T= or IEM-3300-14T2S= the system reaches 26 ports, although IE3300 modules disable SGT/SGACL on the IE3400 base.

No. PoE is not applicable on the 8T2S; the PoE base model is the IE-3400-8P2S, and PoE modules only work with a PoE base switch.

The -E model includes the perpetual Network Essentials licence, which already covers PRP, HSR, DLR, MACsec-128 and NetFlow. Network Advantage (IE3400-NW-A=) adds OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, MACsec-256 and SGT/SGACL. Cisco Catalyst Center licences are optional add-ons.

It has redundant DC inputs rated 9.6 to 60VDC, 6.3A input current and 36W power consumption. Cisco lists DIN-rail supplies including the PWR-IE65W-PC-AC= for the IE3400.
