HX510

The TP-Link HX510 is an AX3000 whole home mesh Wi-Fi system unit with dual-band Wi-Fi 6: up to 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. Each unit has three gigabit Ethernet ports, one of which auto-senses WAN or LAN, works in router or access point mode, supports EasyMesh with optional Ethernet backhaul, and is managed with the Aginet app, the web interface or TAUC and TR-069 by service providers. This listing is one HX510 unit.

HX510 overview

The HX510 is TP-Link's AX3000 whole home mesh Wi-Fi system, sold here as a single unit. TP-Link's datasheet calls it an AX3000 whole home mesh Wi-Fi AP, and its product page says the system delivers a strong Wi-Fi signal to every corner of your home with whole-home coverage and a seamless roaming experience. It is dual-band Wi-Fi 6: IEEE 802.11a/n/ac/ax on 5 GHz and 802.11b/g/n/ax on 2.4 GHz, with signal rates of up to 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, which TP-Link describes as speeds up to 3000 Mbps. TP-Link notes these are maximum physical rates derived from IEEE 802.11 specifications, and that actual throughput, coverage and number of connected devices vary with network conditions, client limitations and the environment. The page lists 1024-QAM, 160 MHz channels and Target Wake Time; Wi-Fi 6, OFDMA, 1024-QAM, HE160, TWT, MU-MIMO and WPA3 require clients that support the same features, and the 160 MHz bandwidth may be unavailable on 5 GHz in some regions because of regulatory restrictions. The datasheet lists a dual-core 1 GHz CPU and internal antennas.

Coverage comes from combining units. TP-Link says that, empowered by EasyMesh technology, the HX510 provides a strong Wi-Fi signal in every corner of the home, with wireless connections and optional Ethernet backhaul working together to link each unit, and that you can add another HX510 unit whenever you want; its footnote states some features require two or more units. All units form one unified network, and TP-Link says a mobile device automatically connects to the fastest unit as you move through the home. Its seamless roaming footnote explains this refers to Wi-Fi roaming using IEEE 802.11k/v/r, helping devices shift from one AP to another within 0.3 seconds; clients need to support 802.11k/v/r, may need additional setup, and performance varies by client device. The datasheet adds client steering and band steering, path fail-over so network resources can stay available via a second link when a backhaul link is unusable, and airtime fairness. Units are added by pressing the WPS buttons on the main AP and the add-on unit, after which the add-on syncs automatically.

Each unit has three gigabit Ethernet ports, and one of them supports WAN/LAN auto-sensing; the datasheet describes these as one 10/100/1000 Mbps WAN/LAN port and two 10/100/1000 Mbps LAN ports. TP-Link says this lets you take full advantage of broadband with speeds up to 1 Gbps through the gigabit WAN/LAN port, and its footnote notes actual network speed may be limited by the port rate, the cable, internet service provider factors and other conditions. The HX510 works in router mode, creating a private wireless network, or access point mode, adding Wi-Fi to an existing wired network. WAN types on the product page are dynamic IP, static IP and PPPoE, with the datasheet also listing L2TP and PPTP. The datasheet lists IPTV with IGMP v2/v3 and IGMP snooping, LED schedule and Wi-Fi schedule, and power comes from a 12 V 1.5 A external supply. The unit measures 120 x 120 x 96.5 mm and operates from 0 to 40 °C.

Security includes WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 Personal encryption, which TP-Link says gives higher password safety and enhanced protection against brute-force attacks, plus WPA/WPA2 Enterprise in the datasheet, an SPI firewall, parental controls to block inappropriate content and restrict time online, and Multi-SSID for separate visitor networks; the product page lists 2 Multi-SSIDs per band, while the datasheet lists up to 4 SSIDs per band. The datasheet also lists OpenVPN, PPTP and IPSec VPN server support. Setup is through the Aginet app or the web interface. For internet providers, TP-Link supports TR-069 remote management via their ACS or the Aginet ACS, together with TR-098, TR-181, TR-111 and TR-143 and TAUC cloud management, and describes the Aginet solution as offering dynamic service provisioning, zero-touch firmware upgrading, remote troubleshooting and mesh Wi-Fi diagnostics. The page lists Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 6 and Wi-Fi CERTIFIED EasyMesh among its certifications. In the box are one HX510 unit, an RJ45 Ethernet cable, a power adapter and a quick installation guide.
