The TP-Link ES208G is an Omada 8-port Gigabit easy managed switch without PoE. It has eight 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports, 16 Gbps switching capacity, 802.1Q VLAN, QoS, IGMP snooping, loop prevention and cable test, a fanless metal case for desktop or wall mounting, and centralised cloud management via the web or the Omada app when used with an Omada controller.

ES208G overview

The ES208G is TP-Link's Omada 8-port Gigabit easy managed switch, the non-PoE model in the 8-port Omada ES range. The AU product page shows hardware version V1.20. It has eight 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX, so it simply connects to computers, printers, NVRs, access points with their own power source, or an uplink to a router. TP-Link describes it as easy to use: it supports plug-and-play for instant connectivity, with simple configuration for additional features when you need them. Because it has no PoE, every device connected to it needs its own power; for powered cameras or access points the ES208GP is the PoE+ sibling with the same eight-port layout.

Performance is sized for a small network. Switching capacity is 16 Gbps and the packet forwarding rate is 11.9 Mpps, with an 8K MAC address table, a 4 Mbit packet buffer, 15 KB jumbo frames and store-and-forward transmission. For quality of service it lists 802.1p and DSCP QoS with 8 priority queues, priority schedule mode with weighted round robin (WRR) and queue weight configuration, bandwidth control with port-based rate limiting, and storm control for broadcast, multicast and unknown-unicast traffic in kbps or pps. TP-Link notes that cable test and port QoS are supported in Standalone Mode, when the switch is managed on its own without a controller.

The layer 2 feature set covers what a small office or surveillance network needs. VLAN support includes MTU VLAN, port-based VLAN and 802.1Q tag VLAN with up to 32 VLAN groups and 4K VIDs, and TP-Link highlights VLAN, port isolation, cable test and QoS for reliable surveillance networking. Static link aggregation supports up to two aggregation groups with up to four ports per group, and the switch adds loopback detection for automatic loop prevention, 802.3x flow control, one-to-one or many-to-one port mirroring on ingress, egress or both, port and traffic statistics, 802.1ab LLDP and IGMP v1/v2/v3 snooping with fast leave for multicast video.

Management can be local or central. Out of the box the ES208G has a web-based GUI, DHCP client and cable diagnostics. Added to an Omada network, it gains centralised cloud management via the web or the Omada app through an Omada cloud-based controller, Omada hardware controller or Omada software controller, along with automatic device discovery, batch configuration, batch firmware upgrading and unified configuration. Cloud access and the Omada app require the use of an Omada controller, and zero-touch provisioning requires the Omada Cloud-Based Controller (Omada Cloud Standard or Omada Cloud Essentials). TP-Link says it works with Omada Central Essentials, which provides free cloud management and monitoring for access points, switches and gateways.

Physically the ES208G is fanless for silent operation, in a durable metal casing for desktop or wall mounting, with a physical security lock slot. It measures 158 x 101 x 25 mm (6.2 x 4.0 x 1.0 in) and has a net weight of 0.45 kg. Power comes from an AC/DC adapter with 100-240 V AC input and 5 V DC / 0.6 A output, and the ports have ±6 kV surge protection. It is rated for -5 to 45 °C operation and 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, and is FCC and CE certified. In the box are the ES208G, a power adapter, rubber feet and an installation guide.
