The TP-Link ES220GMP is an Omada 20-port Gigabit easy managed switch with 16-port PoE+. Its sixteen 802.3af/at PoE+ ports share a 250 W budget with up to 30 W per port, and it adds two Gigabit RJ45 ports and two Gigabit SFP slots, 40 Gbps switching, 250 m PoE, PoE Auto Recovery, VLAN, QoS and IGMP snooping in a 19-inch rackmount metal case with two fans.

ES220GMP overview

The ES220GMP is TP-Link's Omada 20-port Gigabit easy managed switch with 16-port PoE+, shown on the AU page as hardware version V1.20. The twenty ports are sixteen 10/100/1000 Mbps PoE+ RJ45 ports supporting 802.3af PoE and 802.3at PoE+, two 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 ports without PoE, and two Gigabit SFP slots for fibre uplinks, with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX on the copper ports. Power over Ethernet carries data and power on a single cable to 802.3af or 802.3at devices, without the cost of installing power cabling, and the switch automatically detects and supplies the required power.

The 'M' in ES220GMP matters: it has a 250 W PoE budget, against 150 W on the ES220GP, with up to 30 W on any port. That headroom lets more of the sixteen ports run higher-draw devices such as PTZ cameras or Wi-Fi access points at the same time. TP-Link notes that PoE budget calculations are based on laboratory testing, and the actual budget is not guaranteed and will vary due to client limitations and environmental factors. To handle the extra power the ES220GMP has two fans, whereas the ES220GP is fanless. Maximum power consumption is listed at 289.7 W (110 V/60 Hz) with 250 W of powered devices connected, and maximum heat dissipation at 984.88 BTU/hr.

Fast PoE and Perpetual PoE are supported. This switch supports PoE Auto Recovery in Standalone Mode (managed separately without a controller) and manual PoE recovery in Controller Mode (centrally managed with a controller). For distant cameras it supports up to 250 m (820 ft) PoE transmission; ports running at that distance are downgraded to 10 Mbps, and actual distance varies with cable quality. TP-Link groups these with QoS and port isolation as features for reliable surveillance networking.

Switching capacity is 40 Gbps with a 29.76 Mpps forwarding rate, an 8K MAC address table, 4 Mbit packet buffer, 15 KB jumbo frames and store-and-forward transmission. QoS covers port-based, 802.1p and DSCP QoS with 8 priority queues, WRR priority scheduling, queue weight configuration, port-based rate limiting and storm control in kbps or pps; TP-Link notes QoS and priority mode are supported in Standalone Mode. Layer 2 features are MTU VLAN, port-based VLAN and 802.1Q tag VLAN (up to 32 groups, 4K VIDs), static link aggregation, loop prevention and loopback detection, 802.3x flow control, port mirroring, port and traffic statistics, 802.1ab LLDP and IGMP v1/v2/v3 snooping with fast leave.

The switch has a web-based GUI, DHCP client and cable diagnostics, and integrates with an Omada cloud-based, hardware or software controller for centralised cloud management via the web or the Omada app, automatic device discovery, batch configuration, batch firmware upgrading and unified configuration. Zero-touch provisioning requires the Omada Cloud-Based Controller; TP-Link notes that the Cloud-Based Controller offers the Essentials version of cloud services for free, while the Standard version with advanced features requires a licence. The durable metal case is rackmountable, measuring 440 x 180 x 44 mm (17.3 x 7.1 x 1.7 in), with a physical security lock slot, an internal 100-240 V AC, 50/60 Hz power supply and ±6 kV surge protection. It operates from -5 to 50 °C and is FCC and CE certified. In the box are the ES220GMP, power cord, mounting brackets, rubber feet, screws and installation guide.
