The TP-Link EAP770 is an Omada BE9300 tri-band Wi-Fi 7 ceiling access point: up to 5765 Mbps on 6 GHz, 2882 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, with 320 MHz channels on 6 GHz and Multi-Link Operation for Wi-Fi 7 clients. A 2.5G port takes 802.3at PoE+, TP-Link rates it for 380+ clients over about 140 m², and it is managed with any Omada controller or the Omada app.

EAP770 overview

The EAP770 is TP-Link's tri-band Wi-Fi 7 ceiling access point in the Omada range, sold in two regional versions; the BE9300 version supplied here has maximum data rates of 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, 2882 Mbps on 5 GHz and 5765 Mbps on 6 GHz, which TP-Link notes are physical rates derived from the IEEE 802.11 specifications. The 6 GHz band brings cleaner and wider band resources, and up to 320 MHz channel width on that band enables many more simultaneous transmissions at high speed. Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and Multi-RUs reduce latency and interference, and the radios also support 4K-QAM, OFDMA, 2x2 DL/UL MU-MIMO and BSS Colouring. TP-Link states that clients must also support Wi-Fi 7 and these features to use them, that 320 MHz is only available on 6 GHz, and that 320 MHz on 6 GHz and 160 MHz on 5 GHz may be unavailable in some countries due to regulatory restrictions.

Capacity is rated at more than 380 concurrent clients, with a wireless client capacity of 128 per band, and coverage at about 140 m² (1500 ft²). TP-Link notes that coverage is a laboratory figure, and that real capacity depends on the wireless environment and client traffic and is generally less than the maximum number of connections. A single 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port carries the uplink, and it is powered by 802.3at PoE or a 12 V / 2.5 A DC supply, with a power adapter included. Maximum power consumption for this version is 24.05 W on PoE and 20.92 W on DC, a useful figure when sizing a PoE switch budget.

Physically the EAP770 is a 220 x 220 x 32.5 mm disc weighing 730 g, with a PC top cover, an aluminium alloy bottom shell and a stainless steel mounting rack, and 4 kV lightning protection. Antennas are 2 x 4 dBi on 2.4 GHz, 2 x 5 dBi on 5 GHz and 2 x 5 dBi on 6 GHz, plus a 4 dBi Bluetooth 5.2 antenna (TP-Link notes a firmware update may be required for Bluetooth). Ceiling, wall and junction box mounting kits are all included. Up to 24 SSIDs (eight on each band) are supported along with VLANs, and security covers WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 in Personal and Enterprise forms plus OWE, a 4,000-entry MAC filter, client isolation, rogue AP detection, RADIUS accounting, MAC authentication and captive portal authentication.

As part of Omada SDN, the EAP770 is managed centrally with Omada gateways and switches from one interface: the Omada Cloud-Based Controller, an Omada hardware controller or the Omada Software Controller, with the Omada app for on-site work. TP-Link states that Omada Mesh, AI Roaming, captive portal and cloud access require an Omada SDN controller, and that zero-touch provisioning and automatic channel selection and power adjustment require the Omada Cloud-Based Controller. Seamless roaming uses 802.11k/v/r, and band steering, load balance, airtime fairness and beamforming are built in. Management also includes web management, SSH, SNMP v1/v2c/v3, local and remote syslog, email alerts and LED control. ARC IP Networks supplies the EAP770 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
