The TP-Link EAP245 is an Omada AC1750 wireless MU-MIMO gigabit ceiling mount access point: up to 1300 Mbps on 5 GHz and 450 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, MU-MIMO, beamforming, band steering and airtime fairness, two gigabit Ethernet ports, 802.3af/at or 48 V passive PoE power, and centralised management through Omada controllers and the Omada app.

EAP245 overview

The EAP245 is TP-Link's AC1750 wireless MU-MIMO gigabit ceiling mount access point, which TP-Link calls an elite business-class AC1750 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi solution in its Omada range. It is dual band under IEEE 802.11ac/n/g/b/a, with simultaneous signal rates of up to 450 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 1300 Mbps on 5 GHz, totalling 1750 Mbps. TP-Link says QCA enterprise-class chipsets, a dedicated high-power amplifier and a professional antenna, along with 802.11ac Wave 2 MU-MIMO technology, deliver these speeds and long-range coverage over both bands. TP-Link notes that maximum wireless signal rates are the physical rates derived from IEEE Standard 802.11 specifications, and that actual throughput and coverage are not guaranteed and will vary with environmental factors such as building materials and obstacles, network conditions such as interference and traffic density, and client limitations.

The antennas are internal omni: 3 x 3.5 dBi on 2.4 GHz and 3 x 4 dBi on 5 GHz. Advanced wireless features include MU-MIMO, beamforming, band steering, load balance and airtime fairness, which TP-Link says optimise network performance, along with automatic channel assignment, transmit power control in dBm, QoS (WMM), rate limiting, reboot and wireless schedules, and wireless statistics by SSID, AP and client. Transmit power is listed as up to 20 dBm on 2.4 GHz and 23 dBm on 5 GHz under CE, and up to 24 dBm on each band under FCC. 802.11k/802.11v seamless roaming switches clients automatically to the access point with the optimal signal as users move, so voice calls and video streams keep running; TP-Link states that seamless roaming is only supported under the use of Omada controllers, requires clients that support 802.11k/v, may require additional set up, and that performance may vary with the client device.

The EAP245 has two gigabit Ethernet (RJ45) ports. One port accepts power, and TP-Link lists 802.3af/at PoE and 48 V passive PoE (pins 4 and 5 positive, 7 and 8 negative), so it can be powered by a PoE switch or a passive PoE source over the same cable that carries data. The second gigabit port is for bridging. Maximum power consumption is 12.3 W. The housing measures 205.5 x 181.5 x 37.1 mm (8.1 x 7.1 x 1.5 in), with a physical security lock and a reset button, and TP-Link says its elegant appearance and simple mounting design make attachment to a wall or ceiling easy; ceiling and wall mounting kits are included. It operates from 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90 per cent RH non-condensing and carries CE and FCC certification.

For guests, the EAP245 provides a secure guest network with a captive portal that helps ensure only approved guests use the network, and TP-Link lists SMS, Facebook Wi-Fi and voucher authentication options. Other security features include access control, wireless MAC address filtering, wireless isolation between clients, SSID-to-VLAN mapping, rogue AP detection, 802.1X and WEP, WPA/WPA2-Enterprise and WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK. The EAP245 integrates into Omada SDN, with centralised management through the Omada Cloud-Based Controller, the OC300 or OC200 hardware controllers or the Omada Software Controller, cloud access through any of those, and multi-site management. Zero-Touch Provisioning requires the Omada Cloud-Based Controller. The free Omada app lets you configure settings, monitor network status and manage clients from a phone or tablet. Standalone management includes HTTP/HTTPS web management, SSH, SNMP v1/v2c, local and remote syslog, email alerts, LED on/off control and a management VLAN. ARC IP Networks supplies the EAP245 from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
