The TP-Link DS106P is an Omada unmanaged 6-port 10/100 Mbps desktop switch with four 802.3af/at PoE+ ports: up to 30 W per port and a 67 W total PoE budget. Extend Mode reaches up to 250 m on ports 1-4, Priority Mode covers ports 1-2, PoE Auto Recovery reboots unresponsive devices, and it is plug and play in a fanless case.

DS106P overview

The DS106P is a compact unmanaged PoE switch from TP-Link's Omada range. It has six 10/100 Mbps RJ45 ports with auto-negotiation and auto MDI/MDIX, and ports 1 to 4 deliver IEEE 802.3af/at PoE+, so each of those ports carries data and power on an individual cable to a compliant powered device (PD). TP-Link rates each PoE port at up to 30 W, with up to 67 W across all four PoE ports; TP-Link notes that PoE budget figures are based on laboratory testing and the actual budget will vary with client limitations and environmental factors. Ports 5 and 6 are 10/100 Mbps RJ45 ports without PoE.

Three PoE features are built in and need no configuration. Extend Mode on ports 1 to 4 extends the data and power transmission range to up to 250 m; in Extend Mode the port speed drops to 10 Mbps, and TP-Link notes that the actual distance may vary with the power consumption of the powered device and the cable quality and type. Priority Mode gives ports 1 and 2 high priority to protect the quality of sensitive applications. PoE Auto Recovery on ports 1 to 4 keeps PoE devices running by automatically rebooting powered devices that drop out or stop responding. The switch also performs MAC address auto-learning and auto-aging, and supports IEEE 802.3x flow control in full-duplex mode and backpressure in half-duplex mode.

The DS106P is plug and play: TP-Link states that no configuration or central management is required. TP-Link also states that Omada unmanaged switches, including the DS106P, do not support Omada SDN central management. Performance figures are 1.2 Gbps switching capacity and a 0.8928 Mpps packet forwarding rate, with store-and-forward transmission, a 2K MAC address table and 2 KB jumbo frames. Supported standards are IEEE 802.3i, 802.3u, 802.3x, 802.3af and 802.3at, and TP-Link specifies category 5 or 5e UTP (or EIA/TIA-568 100 Ω STP) up to 100 m for 100BASE-TX.

Physically the DS106P measures 158 x 101 x 25 mm, is fanless and has a physical security lock. LEDs show power, link/activity, PoE status and PoE Max. Power comes from an external 53.5 VDC / 1.31 A adapter, and maximum power consumption is 2.52 W with no powered device connected or 75.4 W with 67 W of PDs connected (220 V / 50 Hz). It is rated for operation from 0 °C to 40 °C and carries FCC, CE and RoHS certification. In the box are the switch, a power adapter and an installation guide. ARC IP Networks supplies the DS106P from Australian stock with the full manufacturer's warranty.
