The Cisco CW9163E-Z in depth

Wi-Fi 6E for outdoor spaces

The Catalyst 9163E brings 6 GHz Wi-Fi outdoors with three client-serving 2x2 radios, an IoT radio and a tri-band scanning radio. Its built-in GPS reports location to Automated Frequency Coordination services, which enables standard-power and outdoor 6 GHz operation; Cisco notes outdoor 6 GHz use depends on local regulatory approval. The -Z part number is the Australia/New Zealand regulatory domain version.

Antennas to suit the site

Antennas are not included. The four N-type ports take Cisco's self-identifying CW-ANT-O1-NS-00 omnidirectional dipoles or the CW-ANT-D1-NS-00 4-port directional patch, and an optional CW-ANT-GPS2-S-00 external GNSS antenna connects to the RP-SMA port.

Cloud or on-premises

The CW9163E can be managed on-premises by Catalyst 9800 controllers (IOS XE 17.12.3 or later) or in the cloud through the Meraki dashboard. It is IP67 rated and runs from -40 to 65°C without solar derating.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers about the Cisco CW9163E-Z from the ARC IP Networks team. Last reviewed October 2026.

No. Antennas are not included. Cisco lists the CW-ANT-O1-NS-00 omnidirectional dipole, the CW-ANT-D1-NS-00 4-port directional patch and the optional CW-ANT-GPS2-S-00 GNSS/GPS antenna.

The 9163E has a built-in GPS for AFC standard-power operation, but Cisco states 6 GHz operation depends on local regulatory approval and outdoor 6 GHz is enabled when approval is received. Where 6 GHz is not allowed, that radio is disabled.

802.3at PoE+ runs all three radios at 2x2 with a 2.5 Gbps link (25.5W max). On 802.3af PoE the radios run 1x1 at 1 Gbps (14.0W).

Cisco offers two licensing options: unified wireless licences (Cisco Wireless Essentials or Advantage) through the Cisco Networking Subscription with a 12-month minimum term, or Cisco DNA Essentials or Advantage licences on 3, 5 or 7-year terms.

Cisco states a limited 1-year hardware warranty (WARR-CW-1YR-LTD) with 10-day advance hardware replacement.
