The TP-Link Archer GE550 is a BE9300 tri-band Wi-Fi 7 gaming router rated at 5764 Mbps on 6 GHz and 2882 Mbps on 5 GHz (802.11be), with 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz (802.11ax), 320 MHz channels and 4K-QAM. It has a 5 Gbps WAN port, a 5 Gbps LAN port and three 2.5 Gbps LAN ports, USB 3.0, RGB lighting and a Game Centre with game acceleration, a gaming port and a dedicated 5 GHz gaming band.

Archer GE550 overview

The Archer GE550 is TP-Link's BE9300 tri-band Wi-Fi 7 gaming router. Its 6 GHz band is rated at 5764 Mbps and its 5 GHz band at 2882 Mbps, both on 802.11be, while the 2.4 GHz band is listed at 574 Mbps on 802.11ax. That last figure is worth noting: on the non-gaming Archer BE550, which carries the same BE9300 label, the 2.4 GHz band runs Wi-Fi 7 at 688 Mbps. The Wi-Fi 7 features TP-Link lists for the GE550 are 320 MHz channels and 4K-QAM, and the router is EasyMesh-compatible, works with Alexa and Google Assistant and supports an IoT network.

The GE550's wired side is built around 5 Gbps. TP-Link fits one 5 Gbps WAN port and one 5 Gbps LAN port, which it says maximise gigabit-plus speeds from your internet provider, plus three 2.5 Gbps LAN ports for flexible, high-throughput connections to wired gaming devices. That differs from the Archer BE550's five 2.5 Gbps ports. A USB 3.0 port shares NTFS, exFAT, HFS+ or FAT32 drives as an FTP, media or Samba server. For coverage, TP-Link uses four optimally positioned antennas, its proprietary Wi-Fi optimisation and beamforming so gaming is uninterrupted in every corner of the home.

What makes it a gaming router is TP-Link's Game Centre. Game acceleration covers QoS that automatically detects and optimises gaming streams, a gaming port that prioritises traffic from your game device, and game server acceleration by GPN, which TP-Link describes as a shorter path from gamers to game servers driven by real-time measurements. Game port forwarding takes three steps to connect your console or PC with the game server. The Game Panel shows network status, router performance, RGB settings and accelerated games and gear, game statistics give comprehensive gaming traffic reports, and a dedicated 5 GHz gaming band keeps gaming traffic separate. RGB lighting offers millions of colours and a range of modes.

HomeShield provides real-time IoT protection, a malicious site blocker, an intrusion prevention system, DDoS attack prevention and a home network scanner, with an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding and an application layer gateway alongside. Wi-Fi encryption covers WPA, WPA2, WPA3 and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise (802.1x). There is a guest network on each of the three bands, and OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP and WireGuard are supported as VPN server and VPN client. With EasyMesh, adding another EasyMesh device gives you a dead-zone killer, smart roaming, one Wi-Fi name and unified management from the central router via the Tether app or web UI.

The Archer GE550 runs in Router Mode or Access Point Mode, and supports Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP WAN types, IPTV via IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge and tag VLAN, port forwarding, port triggering, DMZ and UPnP, and IPv4/IPv6. HomeShield parental controls include profiles, a content filter library, Family Time, Bedtime, Off Time, Time Rewards, Pause the Internet and weekly and monthly reports. Management is through the Tether app or web page, with automatic firmware upgrades, TP-Link ID and DDNS (TP-Link, NO-IP, DynDNS).
