The TP-Link Archer BE550 is a BE9300 tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router: 5760 Mbps on 6 GHz, 2880 Mbps on 5 GHz and 688 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, with 320 MHz channels, Multi-Link Operation and 4K-QAM. Six antennas, beamforming and a high-power FEM give coverage TP-Link sizes at four-bedroom houses, and every Ethernet port is 2.5 Gbps: one WAN and four LAN, plus USB 3.0, HomeShield and WireGuard VPN.

Archer BE550 overview

The Archer BE550 is a BE9300 tri-band Wi-Fi 7 router. It adds a 6 GHz band to the usual 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz pair, and TP-Link rates the three radios at 5760 Mbps (6 GHz), 2880 Mbps (5 GHz) and 688 Mbps (2.4 GHz), all on 802.11be, which TP-Link totals as 9328 Mbps of six-stream tri-band Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi 7 features listed are Multi-Link Operation (MLO), 320 MHz channels, 4K-QAM and Multi-RUs, and TP-Link pitches the result at 8K streaming, VR/AR, video conferencing, online gaming and high-speed downloads. Capacity is rated high, with tri-band device allocation, 2x2 MU-MIMO, OFDMA, Airtime Fairness, DFS and six streams.

Coverage is sized for four-bedroom houses. TP-Link uses six optimally positioned antennas inside the tower-style housing, forming a signal-boosting array to cover more directions and larger areas, with beamforming to concentrate signal on clients and a high-power front-end module (FEM) to improve transmission power. The router stands upright and measures 76 x 231.7 x 203 mm. If you still have dead zones, the Archer BE550 is EasyMesh-compatible, so another EasyMesh router or range extender can extend it into a whole-home multi-gigabit mesh.

The wired side is fully multi-gig. All five Ethernet ports run at 2.5 Gbps: one WAN port, which TP-Link says gives up to 2.5 times the wired speed of a typical gigabit port, and four LAN ports that TP-Link presents as future-proofing for the home network. There is no 10 Gbps port on this model; that is the main hardware change on the Archer BE550 Pro, which also lifts the 2.4 GHz rate. A USB 3.0 port shares NTFS, exFAT, HFS+ or FAT32 drives as an FTP, media or Samba server. WAN types are Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP, and the router runs in Router Mode or Access Point Mode, with IPTV, QoS by device and IPv4/IPv6.

Security comes from HomeShield, with real-time IoT protection, a malicious site blocker, an intrusion prevention system, DDoS attack prevention and a home network scanner, plus an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding and an application layer gateway. You can set up a private IoT network with HomeShield and WPA3 overlaid, and new-connection notifications on your phone let you kick off and block suspicious devices. Encryption covers WPA, WPA2, WPA3 and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise. OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP and WireGuard work as server and client, and there is a guest network on each of the three bands.

Parental controls let you block inappropriate content and set time ranges, with HomeShield profiles, a content filter library, Family Time, Bedtime, Off Time, Time Rewards, Pause the Internet and reports. Setup takes minutes through the Tether app on Android or iOS or the web interface, and OTA firmware updates can run on an automatic schedule. The router works with Alexa and Google Assistant, runs from a 12 V 3.3 A supply, and has power, Wi-Fi on/off, LED, WPS and reset buttons. It is rated for 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, with CE and FCC certification.
