The TP-Link Archer A6 is an AC1200 dual-band Wi-Fi 5 router rated at 867 Mbps on 5 GHz and 400 Mbps on 2.4 GHz, with four external antennas, beamforming and MU-MIMO for coverage TP-Link sizes at three-bedroom houses. It has one gigabit WAN and four gigabit LAN ports, OpenVPN, PPTP and WireGuard VPN server and client, WPA3, OneMesh and EasyMesh support, and Tether app management.

Archer A6 overview

The Archer A6 is TP-Link's AC1200 wireless MU-MIMO gigabit router, a dual-band Wi-Fi 5 model built on IEEE 802.11ac/n/a at 5 GHz and IEEE 802.11n/b/g at 2.4 GHz. TP-Link rates the 5 GHz band at up to 867 Mbps (802.11ac), which it pitches for HD video streaming and lag-free online gaming, and the 2.4 GHz band at up to 400 Mbps (802.11n) for everyday tasks such as email and web browsing. A 1.2 GHz CPU runs the router, and TP-Link rates its Wi-Fi capacity as medium: the dual-band design allocates devices to different bands, MU-MIMO communicates with multiple MU-MIMO clients simultaneously, and Airtime Fairness improves network efficiency by limiting excessive occupation of the airtime by any one device.

For coverage, TP-Link lists the Archer A6's Wi-Fi range as suitable for three-bedroom houses. Four fixed high-performance external antennas form a signal-boosting array to send Wi-Fi to more directions and larger areas, and beamforming detects devices, whether they are far away or low powered, and concentrates wireless signal strength towards them. TP-Link's own framing is that you stay connected whether you are on the sofa or the balcony. Where one router is not enough, the Archer A6 supports TP-Link OneMesh, which pairs it with a OneMesh range extender to form a mesh network with a single Wi-Fi name, smart roaming and unified management of the whole-home network from the central router through the Tether app or web interface. It is also listed with EasyMesh support for building a mesh with EasyMesh-compatible devices.

Wired connections run through one gigabit WAN port and four gigabit LAN ports, which TP-Link says can be up to ten times faster than standard Ethernet connections. WAN types are Dynamic IP, Static IP, PPPoE, PPTP and L2TP, and the router needs a cable or DSL modem where your connection requires one. Besides Router Mode, the Archer A6 can be switched to Access Point Mode to share an existing wired network with wireless devices. IPTV support covers IGMP proxy, IGMP snooping, bridge and tag VLAN, QoS by device is available, and both IPv4 and IPv6 are supported. NAT forwarding includes port forwarding, port triggering, DMZ and UPnP, and the DHCP server offers address reservation and a client list.

Security starts with WPA3, which TP-Link describes as the latest Wi-Fi security protocol, bringing more secure encryption for Wi-Fi passwords and enhanced protection against brute-force attacks; WPA, WPA2 and WPA/WPA2-Enterprise (802.1x) are also supported. Network protection comprises an SPI firewall, access control, IP and MAC binding and an application layer gateway. The Archer A6 runs OpenVPN, PPTP and WireGuard VPN servers and can act as a client for the same three protocols. There is one guest network on each band, and parental controls provide URL filtering and time controls.

Setup and day-to-day management are handled through the free TP-Link Tether app for Android and iOS or through the router's web page, and cloud services cover OTA firmware upgrades, TP-Link ID and DDNS, with TP-Link DDNS, NO-IP and DynDNS supported. The router has a WPS/Wi-Fi button, a power on/off button and a reset button, runs from a 12 V 1 A supply and measures 215 x 117 x 32 mm. It is rated for operation from 0 to 40 degrees C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, and certifications are FCC and CE. The box contains the Archer A6 router, a power adapter, an RJ45 Ethernet cable and a quick installation guide.
