Smart IR is Hikvision’s adaptive infrared night vision: the camera automatically dials its infrared LEDs up or down based on how close a subject is, so a face at your door stays clear instead of washing out to a white blur, while the rest of the scene stays evenly lit. What is Smart IR?
After dark, most CCTV cameras switch to black-and-white and switch on infrared (IR) LEDs — an invisible light (typically 850 nm on Hikvision cameras) that the sensor can see but the human eye cannot. This is how a camera “sees in the dark” without any visible glow.
Smart IR is Hikvision’s refinement of that idea. Instead of firing the IR LEDs at a single fixed brightness all night, a Smart IR camera continuously measures the brightness coming back from the scene and automatically adjusts the IR intensity. When something moves in close — a person walking up to your front door — the camera eases the IR down so their face is exposed correctly rather than blown out to a featureless white shape. Hikvision also calls the underlying hardware “Smart Supplement Light” on many newer models.
The practical payoff is simple: usable footage of the people who matter, right where they approach, at the exact moment you need an identification.
How adaptive IR actually works
The mechanism is a feedback loop that runs many times a second:
- Measure: the camera reads the exposure of the brightest parts of the image (usually the closest, most reflective objects).
- Adjust: if those areas are getting too bright, it reduces IR LED output; if the scene goes dark and empty again, it lifts the IR back up to keep distance covered.
- Balance: the goal is an even exposure across the frame — close subjects readable, far objects still lit — instead of a bright “hot spot” in the centre and darkness at the edges.
Because IR reflects strongly off nearby surfaces (skin, number plates, white walls, doors), a fixed IR camera tends to overexpose anything close. Adaptive IR is what keeps that same close-up subject looking like a person rather than a ghost. Higher-end Hikvision models pair this with their DarkFighter low-light sensor, which gathers more light in near-dark conditions before the IR even needs to work hard.
Smart IR vs basic (fixed) IR
The difference is easiest to see at a doorway or gate, where subjects come very close to the lens:
| Aspect | Basic fixed IR | Smart IR (Hikvision) |
|---|---|---|
| LED control | One fixed brightness all night | Continuously auto-adjusted to the scene |
| Close-up subject | Often overexposed — washed-out white face | Correctly exposed, facial detail preserved |
| Faces at the door | Hard to identify when the glare hits | Clear, usable identification |
| Number plates up close | Can bloom out and become unreadable | Held at a readable exposure |
| Distant background | Lit, but often at the expense of the foreground | Stays lit while the foreground is balanced |
| Best fit | Simple, open long-range views | Entries, driveways, gates — anywhere people get close |
In short: basic IR lights everything the same and lets the physics fall where they may; Smart IR actively protects the most important part of the shot — the subject up close.
EXIR and IR range basics
You’ll also see EXIR on Hikvision bullet and turret cameras. EXIR is Hikvision’s efficient IR design: rather than a ring of LEDs around the lens, it uses a purpose-built IR module with a reflector that spreads infrared more evenly across the field of view. The result is fewer dark corners and less of the central “bright blob” you get from older LED arrays — and it pairs naturally with Smart IR.
Reading IR range
- IR distance is a maximum, not a guarantee. A stated figure such as “up to 40 m” assumes a reflective subject and a clear scene. Rain, fog, dust and dark/absorptive surfaces all shorten it.
- Match the range to the job. A doorway or entry only needs a short reach; a long driveway, car park or yard benefits from a longer-range bullet.
- Wider lenses spread IR thinner. A very wide angle of view divides the same IR power over more area, so effective night range is shorter than a narrower lens on the same camera.
Hikvision publishes an IR range for each model — always size the camera to the actual distance you need to cover, and our team is happy to help you match one to your site.
Smart IR vs ColorVu colour night vision
Smart IR and ColorVu solve night vision in two different ways, and it’s worth knowing which you want:
- Smart IR uses invisible infrared to produce a clean black-and-white image in total darkness — discreet (no visible light), works at 0 lux, and excels at detail and identification up close.
- ColorVu uses an ultra-sensitive sensor and a supplementary warm white light to deliver full-colour footage at night — ideal when the colour of a car, clothing or bag is what you need to recall.
Many current Hikvision cameras offer a hybrid mode, staying in low-key IR until an event triggers the white light for colour. If colour at night is your priority, read our colour night vision guide; for how Hikvision’s two flagship technologies compare, see ColorVu vs AcuSense.
Best uses and setup tips
Front doors & entries
The classic Smart IR win — people approach close, so adaptive IR keeps faces exposed instead of blown out.
Driveways & gates
Vehicles and visitors pass at varying distances; Smart IR balances the near number plate against the darker background.
Discreet monitoring
Invisible 850 nm IR means no glow, so the camera keeps watching without drawing attention after dark.

Frequently asked questions
Smart IR is adaptive infrared night vision. The camera automatically adjusts the intensity of its infrared LEDs based on how close and reflective a subject is, so nearby objects — like a face at the door — are exposed correctly instead of washing out to white, while the rest of the scene stays evenly lit.
Normal (fixed) IR runs the LEDs at one constant brightness all night, which tends to overexpose anything close to the lens. Smart IR continuously measures the scene and dims or lifts the IR to keep close subjects readable while still lighting the background.
Yes. Infrared night vision works at 0 lux — total darkness — because the camera provides its own invisible IR light. Smart IR simply manages that light more intelligently so the footage is balanced rather than glary.
Hikvision cameras typically use 850 nm IR, which is invisible to the human eye (you may notice only a faint dark-red glimmer from the LEDs up close). The scene appears completely dark to people while the camera sees clearly.
Smart IR produces a clean black-and-white image using invisible infrared and is very discreet. ColorVu uses an ultra-sensitive sensor and a warm white light to deliver full-colour footage at night. IR is best for discreet detail; ColorVu is best when you need to see colour.
EXIR is Hikvision’s efficient IR design. Instead of a simple LED ring, it uses a dedicated IR module and reflector that spreads infrared more evenly across the frame, reducing dark corners and central glare — and it works hand in hand with Smart IR.
It depends on the model — Hikvision publishes an IR range for each camera, commonly from around 30 m on compact domes up to 80 m or more on long-range bullets. The stated figure is a maximum for a clear scene and reflective subject; rain, fog and dark surfaces reduce it.
For a front door or entry, a short-range Smart IR turret or dome is ideal because subjects come close — adaptive IR is exactly what keeps their face exposed. For a long driveway, choose a longer-range EXIR bullet. Our team can help match the right camera to your site.
