Hikvision DarkFighter is a low-light imaging technology that pairs a large, ultra-sensitive image sensor with a wide aperture so cameras capture clear, detailed footage in very dim conditions — full colour at low light levels, and black-and-white with infrared in near-total darkness. What is Hikvision DarkFighter?

DarkFighter is Hikvision's family of low-light imaging technologies, first launched in 2013. The goal is simple: keep footage usable when there is very little light to work with — car parks after hours, laneways, perimeters, loading docks and streetscapes where standard cameras produce dark, noisy, unusable images.

Rather than relying only on floodlighting, a DarkFighter camera is built around a physically large, highly light-sensitive image sensor combined with a wide (fast) lens aperture. Together these gather far more of the available ambient light — moonlight, distant street lamps, spill from signage — and turn it into a clean, detailed picture. In practice that means full-colour images at low light levels, and a switch to sharp black-and-white with infrared when a scene is effectively pitch dark.

DarkFighter has since grown into a range: the original DarkFighter, the dual-sensor DarkFighterX, DarkFighterS, and the AI-assisted DarkFighter 2.0. If you also want colour at night on a budget, it is worth comparing DarkFighter with Hikvision's ColorVu range — see the comparison below.

How DarkFighter works

Three ingredients do most of the heavy lifting in a DarkFighter camera:

  • A large, high-sensitivity sensor. DarkFighter cameras use big progressive-scan CMOS sensors. A larger sensor collects more photons per pixel, which lifts sensitivity, improves the signal-to-noise ratio and widens dynamic range — so bright and dark parts of the same scene both stay readable.
  • A wide aperture lens. A faster aperture lets more light reach the sensor, which is exactly what you need once the sun goes down.
  • Smart image processing. On-board processing reduces noise and sharpens detail so the extra light the sensor captures becomes a clean image rather than a grainy one.

As light fades, the camera keeps producing colour for as long as there is usable ambient light. When a scene becomes too dark for that, DarkFighter models switch to infrared and deliver a crisp black-and-white image instead of losing the picture entirely. The result is dependable coverage across the full day-to-night cycle. For a plain-English primer on night imaging generally, see our guide to colour night vision cameras.

DarkFighter vs ColorVu: what's the difference?

Both technologies fight darkness, but they solve slightly different problems. ColorVu is engineered for 24/7 full colour, typically using a very fast F1.0 aperture plus a discreet supplement light so the picture stays in colour even in total darkness — ideal for shopfronts, entrances and driveways. DarkFighter is built for maximum sensitivity to whatever ambient light already exists, which suits wider scenes, streetscapes and long-range views where you want natural detail without lighting up the whole area.

DarkFighterX: dual-sensor imaging

DarkFighterX takes a different route to colour in the dark. Inspired by how the human eye perceives brightness and colour, it uses two sensors: one captures infrared for brightness and sharpness, the other captures visible light for colour. Hikvision's image processing then fuses the two signals into a single bright, full-colour picture, even in extremely low light.

This dual-sensor (bi-spectral fusion) approach is aimed at demanding scenes where you need both brightness and true colour at the same time — often found in premium PTZ and specialist models rather than everyday fixed cameras.

DarkFighter 2.0 and DarkFighterS

Hikvision has continued to develop the range. DarkFighterS combines a very wide aperture and a specially designed lens for sharp, professional low-light imaging in both colour and black-and-white. DarkFighter 2.0 is the latest generation, adding AI-assisted image processing on top of large sensors to lift detail and colour accuracy for 24/7 colourful capture in complex, changing light — keeping moving objects clear even as light levels shift.

Many current DarkFighter 2.0 models also feature Smart Hybrid Light, letting the camera use infrared or white light as the scene demands. If you are matching cameras to a recorder, our NVR guide and hub can help you build a complete system.

Best uses for DarkFighter cameras

Car parks & laneways

Recover number plates, faces and movement in dim after-hours areas without flooding the space with light.

Perimeters & yards

Wide, dark boundaries where you want detail from moonlight and spill lighting alone.

Streets & PTZ

Long-range and moving scenes where DarkFighterX-class colour and brightness earn their keep.

Warehouses & docks

Large interiors with uneven lighting benefit from the wide dynamic range of a big sensor.

Retail & hospitality

Keep evening trade covered with clean colour before switching to infrared overnight.

Rural & remote sites

Ideal where mains lighting is limited and every bit of ambient light counts.

DarkFighter is Hikvision's low-light camera technology. It combines a large, highly light-sensitive sensor with a wide aperture so the camera produces clear, detailed footage in very dim conditions — full colour at low light levels and black-and-white with infrared in near-total darkness.

ColorVu is designed for 24/7 full colour, usually with a very fast aperture plus a supplement light. DarkFighter is designed for maximum sensitivity to existing ambient light, making it well suited to wider, darker or long-range scenes. They are complementary, and many sites use both.

Yes. In very dark scenes a DarkFighter camera switches to infrared and delivers a sharp black-and-white image, so you keep usable footage even when there is effectively no visible light.

DarkFighterX is a dual-sensor version: one sensor captures infrared for brightness and one captures visible light for colour, and the two are fused into a single bright, full-colour image in extremely low light. It is typically found in premium and PTZ models.

DarkFighter 2.0 is the latest generation, adding AI-assisted image processing to large sensors for improved detail and colour in complex, changing light. Many models also include Smart Hybrid Light to use infrared or white light as needed.

Not usually. DarkFighter is built to make the most of whatever ambient light is present, and it falls back to infrared when a scene is too dark. Adding some light can still help colour detail, but many sites run DarkFighter cameras with no extra lighting.

They are a strong choice for identifying detail in dim conditions thanks to their sensitivity and wide dynamic range. For dedicated plate capture, pair the right lens and positioning with a suitable model — our team can advise.
