The TP-Link VX230v is an AX1800 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 VDSL/ADSL modem router. It supports VDSL2 up to profile 35b with G.vector, ADSL2+/ADSL2/ADSL, a gigabit Ethernet WAN port for fibre or cable connections, three gigabit LAN ports, a USB 2.0 port for storage sharing or a 3G/4G modem, an FXS port for VoIP telephony with up to 8 SIP accounts, WPA3 security and EasyMesh compatibility. Wi-Fi signal rates are 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz.

VX230v overview

The VX230v is TP-Link's AX1800 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 VDSL/ADSL modem router: a single box that terminates a DSL line, routes the connection and provides Wi-Fi, wired ports and VoIP telephony. TP-Link describes it as a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) DSL modem router with multiple connection options and VoIP telephony. On the DSL side it supports VDSL2 to ITU G.993.2 up to profile 35b, with G.vector (ITU-T G.993.5) for advanced data transmission stability and G.INP (ITU-T G.998.4). TP-Link states that super VDSL (VDSL2 profile 35b) delivers internet speeds of up to 350 Mbps; its footnote adds that 350 Mbps internet speeds require compatible service plans and equipment, and that actual speed may be limited by the Ethernet port rate, cabling, internet service provider factors and other conditions. The modem is also fully compatible with ADSL2+ (ITU-T G.992.5), ADSL2 (G.992.3 and G.992.4) and ADSL (full-rate ANSI T1.413 Issue 2, G.992.1, G.992.2, G.994.1 and G.995.1), and its ATM features cover PPP over ATM, PPP over Ethernet, IPoA, MER/IPoE and bridge modes with up to 8 PVCs.

Not every connection is DSL, so the VX230v also has a 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 WAN port. TP-Link says this supports fibre and cable connections through the Ethernet port, as well as 3G/4G internet services through the USB port, where the USB sharing features list a 3G/4G modem alongside Samba storage, FTP server and media server. Three 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 LAN ports provide wired connections for computers, consoles or a switch, and an FXS port connects a telephone for VoIP. VoIP support is SIP with up to 8 accounts, call logs, call rules, do-not-disturb and call blocking, call forwarding, voice mail and T.38, which TP-Link presents as support for multiple VoIP accounts and call features to surpass traditional landlines. Buttons include power on/off, reset, WPS on/off and Wi-Fi on/off, and power comes from a 12V/2.0A external supply. TP-Link's VX230v datasheet adds that the router uses internal antennas, and that with the FXS port users can make or receive phone calls over the internet simply by connecting the device to their existing telephone set.

Wireless is dual-band Wi-Fi 6: IEEE 802.11ax/ac/n/a on 5 GHz and 802.11ax/b/g/n on 2.4 GHz, with signal rates of 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. TP-Link notes these are maximum physical rates derived from the IEEE 802.11 specifications, and that actual throughput, coverage and number of connected devices vary with network conditions, client limitations and the environment. High-performance antennas and beamforming are used to extend Wi-Fi through the home, and OFDMA and MU-MIMO increase capacity for simultaneous transmission to more devices; Wi-Fi 6, OFDMA, MU-MIMO, 1024-QAM and WPA3 require clients that support the same features. Wireless functions include Air Time Fairness, WMM, wireless statistics, MAC filtering and schedules for both bands, plus 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz guest networks. The VX230v is EasyMesh compatible with 802.11k/v/r support; TP-Link states that a mesh network requires two or more devices, that the product is compatible with standardised EasyMesh technology but has not obtained Wi-Fi EasyMesh certification, that it can only work as a controller, and that seamless roaming is designed for devices supporting 802.11k/v.

Security covers WPA/WPA2/WPA3 encryption, an IPv4/IPv6 SPI firewall, DDoS protection, service filtering, access control and IP and MAC binding. VPN support lists OpenVPN, PPTP and IPSec, with up to 16 IPSec VPN tunnels, and routing features include NAT forwarding, QoS, address reservation, a DHCP server with client list, relay and condition pools, virtual servers, port triggering, DMZ, ALG and UPnP, and Dyn DNS, NO-IP and TP-Link DNS dynamic DNS. Local management is through the web interface and the Aginet app; the app needs a TP-Link ID with the device bound to it. For service providers, TP-Link lists TR-069, TR-098, TR-181, TR-369, TR-111 and TR-143 remote management and TP-Link Aginet Unified Cloud (TAUC). The router measures 199.7 x 148.6 x 67.5 mm, operates from 0 to 40 °C at 10 to 90% non-condensing humidity, and comes with an RJ45 Ethernet cable, power adapter, RJ11 cable and quick installation guide. The datasheet also lists four SSIDs per band (4 on 2.4 GHz and 4 on 5 GHz), IGMP proxy, static routing, RIP v1/v2, DNS relay, parental control and 802.1q VLAN and interface binding, along with a reboot schedule, configuration backup and restore, diagnostics tools and local and remote system logs. The datasheet's package list also includes an external splitter, which the AU product page does not list.

VDSL2 up to profile 35b and ADSL2+/ADSL2/ADSL through its DSL port, fibre or cable connections through its gigabit Ethernet WAN port, and 3G/4G internet through a USB modem.

TP-Link states up to 350 Mbps with VDSL2 profile 35b. This requires a compatible service plan and equipment, and real speed depends on your provider, cabling and line conditions.

It is an AX1800 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router with signal rates of 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz. These are maximum physical rates; real throughput varies with clients and the environment.

Yes. The VX230v has an FXS port for a telephone and supports SIP VoIP with up to 8 accounts, call logs, call rules, do-not-disturb, call blocking, call forwarding, voice mail and T.38.

One 10/100/1000 Mbps WAN port and three 10/100/1000 Mbps LAN ports, plus one DSL port, one FXS port and one USB 2.0 port.

TP-Link lists Samba storage sharing, an FTP server, a media server and a 3G/4G modem.

It is compatible with standardised EasyMesh and supports 802.11k/v/r. A mesh needs two or more devices, the VX230v works only as the controller, and it does not hold Wi-Fi EasyMesh certification.

WPA/WPA2/WPA3 encryption, an IPv4/IPv6 SPI firewall, DDoS protection, service filtering, access control, IP and MAC binding, and 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz guest networks. WPA3 needs clients that support it.

Yes. TP-Link lists OpenVPN, PPTP VPN and IPSec VPN, with up to 16 IPSec VPN tunnels.

TP-Link's datasheet lists 4 SSIDs on 2.4 GHz and 4 SSIDs on 5 GHz, and the product page lists 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz guest networks.

No. The VX230v datasheet lists internal antennas, with beamforming to extend Wi-Fi through the home.

Through the web interface or the Aginet app, which needs a TP-Link ID with the router bound to it. Service providers can also manage it through TR-069 family protocols and TP-Link Aginet Unified Cloud.
